Columbus, New Mexico, in the early spring of 1916 was a sleepy little border town.
The line was operated by Southwest Railroad Company of New Mexico from 1901, by the El Paso and Southern Railroad from 1902 (which purchased or merged with the line), and by the Southern Pacific Transportation Company from 1924 under lease (and merged with that company) until its abandonment in 1961.
Columbus is regaining part of its past as NAFTA enlivens the trucking industry across the Mexican-United States border and as tourists search for the heritage of the last place in the lower forty-eight states that has been invaded by a foreign army.

In early 1941, the Border Patrol Station was relocated 32 miles South of Deming at Columbus, New Mexico which is 3 miles North of the border.
In 1973, the Columbus Border Patrol Station was closed and all personnel were reassigned to Deming, New Mexico which has remained the official Station to the present.
Two major factors which contributed to this increase were: severe economic conditions in Mexico caused by the devaluation of the Mexican peso, and the success of several long-term strategic Border Patrol operations conducted on the border in adjacent areas.
