After completing basic training at Lackland AFB, Jim was sent to James Connally AFB in Waco, Texas, while he still waited for an opening in a cadet class.
At the time, Columbus AFB was one of nine contract basic pilot training schools operated by California Eastern Airways, Inc. They provided all of the flight instruction using civilian instructors, but were under strict Air Force supervision.
They were at Columbus AFB as part of the Military Defense Assistance Program (MDAP), which allowed student pilots from other western NATO countries to be trained in the United States.

In 1986, I was assigned to Altus AFB, Oklahoma to train as Pilot in Command on the C-141 Starlifter.
He was assigned as a T-38 Instructor Pilot at 50th Flying Training Squadron, Columbus AFB, Mississippi and flew as Instructor Pilot in the T-38, was an Academic Instructor and Instructional Program developer.
