The age distribution of the base is: 33.4% under the age of 18, 21.8% from 18 to 24, 41.4% from 25 to 44, 2.7% from 45 to 64, and 0.7% who are 65 years of age or older.

One-third of all U.S. Air Force pilots receive their initial pilot training in Columbus, earning their coveted "silver wings." The base began in the early '40s as an Army Air Corps pilot training base and was closed from WWII's end until 1951, when the Korean War brought it back to life.

Families living on the Columbus Air Force Base may soon have the option of letting their children attend Lowndes County schools, if the Lowndes County School District's Board of Education has its way.
While there has been no formal statement from CAFB parents requesting their children be allowed to attend county schools, county Superintendent of Education Mike Halford said Caledonia schools can offer them the advanced curriculum they want and the schools' history of high performance on state tests speaks for itself.
CAFB students bring in an estimated $500 each in additional federal “impact aid” to the city school district, a fund Beason said was established to compensate for those families not paying property taxes.

The mobile unit was a scarce item in the Air Force stockpiles and was obtained from the11th Mobile Group's Detachment 7 at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
It was flown to Bakalar Air Force Base by the 434th Troop Carrier Wing on a C-119G Flying Boxcar.
