Similarly, when going from a dismounted to a mounted formation, the carriers should be brought forward to the squads in the same formation that the platoon is using on the ground.
Training in dismounted formations should be conducted initially on open terrain similar to a parade ground; then on varied terrain when individuals and units become proficient in assuming these formations; and finally, in integrated mounted and dismounted formations with tank units.
The squad column may be modified by the squad leader as necessary to conform to the terrain and to provide a greater capability to deliver fire immediately to either the front or rear.

  Primer on Tacticsand Formations
Column or Staggered Column (a variant of Box) is used for moving where there is insufficient room to spread out into Wedge.
The use of the Column formation should be limited to the opening stages of a battle in Combat Mission and within friendly lines, and the Platoon should be deployed into a combat formation as soon as contact with the enemy is probable (even if not likely).
The formation is also better when an enemy is likely to be encountered on the flanks since an enemy will encounter the fire of at least a Squad and a half.

When the platoon drills as part of a larger formation, in a line formation, the platoon sergeant’s post is one step to the rear and centered on the platoon; in a column formation, the platoon sergeant is one step behind and centered between the second and third squads.

Those of you who have been paying attention all along may now notice something peculiar: That column formation sure looks a lot like that line formation did, except that everybody is facing to the right of where they were in line.
Instead the Romans marched in column for both administrative and tactical reasons: The road size dictated a narrow formation, and presenting a narrow front to the enemy effectively hid the size of your force.
Probably because traditionally during ceremonial occasions, the king or emperor would have have his men fall into a formation that is wider than it is deep in order to make his legions look as large as possible (which could serve as a deterrent to potential enemies).

In the column each member covers the opposite direction of the person in front of him, so that both sides are completely watched, with point focusing on the front and rear stopping every 50m or so to be still and observe if there is anyone following.
Formations also provide 360-degree security and allow units to give the weight of their firepower to the flanks or front in anticipation of enemy contact.
The use of formations allows soldiers to execute battle drills more quickly and gives them the assurance that their leaders and buddy team members are in their expected positions and performing the right tasks.

 Formation
Units must be in one of three formations at all times, a one element deep line, a one element wide column, or in a square.
When changing from column to line, rear elements are placed alongside the leading element, which cannot be moved, or turned, therefore the new line will face in exactly the same direction the column originally faced.
When changing from line to column facing the same direction, one element is chosen to remain stationary, the others may only be moved directly in front of it to form the column.

A: The maximum number of files or columns that a unit may have to be in march column is up to 4 figures wide for regular infantry units and 2 figures wide for regular cavalry units.
Less files or columns are allowed, of course, but this would stretch out the length of the unit and may make it vulnerable to attack by enemy units before it could change into a battleline formation.
Since march column is not a proper battle formation, units that melee in march column may only melee with the front rank of troops and are not entitled to a ranking bonus of any kind.

This being the case it was generally held that the more complicated a formation and the more numerous it’s parts, the greater the danger that control would be lost in a moment of emergency, especially when moving over countryside which prohibited visual contact between the various elements of the formation.

The platoon leader uses formations for several purposes: to relate one vehicle or squad to another on the ground, to position firepower to support the direct-fire plan, to establish responsibilities for sector security among vehicles or squads, or to aid in the execution of battle drills and directed COAs.
The platoon normally uses the line formation when no terrain remains between it and the enemy, when the platoon has suppressed the enemy's antitank weapons, or when the platoon is vulnerable to artillery fire and must move fast.

The manual mentions that companies will automatically switch to combat formation when given an attack order....however, when I do this with companies in column formation, while they are attacking, the game states they are still in column...are they really in combat and will switch back when finished?
What *really* happens when a column formation unit is given an attack order is they will pursue the enemy at column speed and then drop into combat mode upon engagement, so they may *start* the fight at less than optimal efficiency, but will reach the fight sooner.
There is still one boon to actually choosing combat formation before the attack, though a small one, that the frontline/support will align itself better when in combat formation (though when aligned like this, is more vulnerable to being flanked).
