  colwick
The family of Colwick were supposed to have taken the name of Colwick and used it as their family name there is no known record of the original family name of the owners.
By the year 1893 Colwick now had a population of approximately 600 people, the main reason appears to be the railway which brought employment to the local villages, which up to this time was farming.
The Colwick church still exists but this is in ruin, and this is a later version which was built in the in the 16th century at great expense by Sir John Musters after he acquired Colwick Hall.

Colwick Hall stood in its park, a long low handsome building of brick, and it was the promised hospitality of the place that at first kept him on his guard in the midst of pleasure.
But no sooner were the horses standing front to back, parallel to Colwick Hall behind them--Stubbs had already decided that the handsome elongated manor house would stretch its pinkish brick from one edge of the painting to the other--than Lady Nelthorpe understood exactly what Stubbs wanted: a total view of her.
Carefully she arranged the skirt of her riding dress--she was seated sidesaddle on her gentle hack--so that it flowed as far forward and down as possible from her upraised knee and as smoothly as possible down from that exaggerated curve she made of her body from her shoulders to the rear of the saddle.

Nottinghamshire: history and archaeology | Arms, Armour and Alabaster Round Nottingham: St. John the Baptist, Colwick
The Colwick property came by the marriage in the fourteenth century of Joan, daughter and heir of William de Colwick, with Sir Richard Byron, of Clayton, in the County of Lancaster, as his second wife.
It is in the Church at Colwick that may be found the massive alabaster tomb of Sir John Byron, Knight of the Bath, bearing the effigies of the Knight and his wife, Alice, daughter of Sir Nicholas Strelley, Knight, of Strelley.
Sir John, who died in 1609, is represented in plate armour with a skirt of lances of metal, a frill round his neck and wrists, a long chain round his shoulders, sabbatons and a short-hilted sword.

Nottinghamshire: history and archaeology | Miscellaneous articles: The Byron Vault at Hucknall Torkard (1)
This last-named Sir John, who bore the arms of Byron quarterly with those of Colwick, within a sable bordure to denote his illegitimacy, received the honour of knighthood three years after his father's death, and dying himself in 1609, was buried in the chancel at Colwick.
So long as Colwick remained in the possession of the Byrons, the chancel of Colwick Church seems to have been invariably chosen as the family burial-place, at all events down to the year 1638, when the first burial of one of the family at Hucknall Torkard is recorded in the parish registers.
What lead to the abandonment of the ancient family burial-place at this particular period is doubtful, for Colwick was not disposed of at that time though very possibly the sale of the manor may have been in contemplation, and thus another place was chosen.
