Movie production had dwindled from an annual total of 200 movies in the years before 1997, to a measly 60 movies in 2002.
There were three superhero fantasy-action movies, one horror movie, four family-oriented dramas, and for viewers who didn’t have to bring the whole family, one urban sex-comedy.
The movie was a hit for Seiko Films, and was particularly strong with the female A and B demographic.

COMA is just another example for all those film critics of today who consider 1970s to be the Golden Age of world cinema.
That time period was very fruitful for many movie directors who had made many great films, only to deliver disappointments in the latter decades.
The movie was deliberately left without original musical score for most of its part, except in the suspense scenes, when always reliable Jerry Goldsmith provides needed audio stimuli for suspense and horror.

Coma is a classic mystery with touches of Hitchcock suspense and twists.
Her queries to various superiors and to Mark Bellows (Michael Douglas), her lover, are passed off as an emotional reaction to the coma which her close friend has fallen into.
Her escape is perfectly played and staged; it is frightening and eerie as the climax to a long chase scene.

The medical-moral-ethical issues that appeared obvious in the movie were, abortion, access to patient records and patient privacy, patient and family rights of informed consent in medical treatment, the procurement of organs for transplant, the decision between life and death in a sustained vegetative (brain dead) state, and medical malpractice.
In the movie Coma, the healthcare professional and patient interaction is disengaged, and clinical.
In the movie Coma, nurses in the hospital are seen as nameless and faceless figures in the shadows of the background, lackadaisically taking orders from doctors, answering phones, and clumsily caring for their patients.

 Qwipster's Movie Reviews - Review: Coma (1978)
Bujold plays a young doctor who begins to suspect something is amiss in the hospital she works at when her best friend falls into a coma after undergoing an abortion.
After further digging into the matter, she is startled to discover the high rate of patients who go into comas who are otherwise healthy, and they have one thing in common: they were all operated on in OR 8.
COMA could have been better, but there's enough intelligence in the main idea and some genuine chills to make it worthwhile entertainment.

Plot: Based on the best-selling novel by Robin Cook, COMA is a taught paranoid thriller and a dramatically apt metaphor for the corruption and fraud in the modern American health-care industry.
When Wheeler discovers a suspiciously frequent pattern of unexplained comas in her hospital, she becomes obsessed with finding an answer, even when it puts her own career and life in danger.
With its suspensful plot, dramatic editing, and conspiratorial terror, COMA is a precursor to many paranoid dramas such as THE FIRM and THE PELICAN BRIEF, establishing a defined style that may yet become a genre unto itself.

 Coma Movie
As a thriller, Coma certainly has its moments (the scene where a hit man is buried under a pile of frozen-stiff cadavers is an inspired touch), but it's not without its problems.
However, the movie's cold, detached feel works against it at times, making the suspense scenes oddly more effective but rendering the emotional content of the characters rather flat.
Douglas in particular seems to not put much into his performance; Bujold, on the other hand, is strong and resourceful as the movie's protagonist.

The movie's premises are ludicrous, and the medical sequences are unrelentingly gross despite the 'PG' rating, but some viewers may find the action sequences to be entertainingly paced and Bujold's freshness a pleasing compensation for the plot's stupidities.
