The Comal River is the shortest river in Texas, running entirely within the city limits of New Braunfels in southeast Comal County.
It is a tributary of the Guadalupe River.
The river is primarily used for water recreation today, being the location of the original Schlitterbahn water amusement park.

The river is extremely scenic, and a sufficient water flow for recreational use exists throughout its entire length, with the exception of the extreme upper reaches.
However, the river is extremely narrow and shallow, and conditions are not conducive for recreational use until the river reaches the vicinity of Comfort and Waring.
This 24-mile section of the Guadalupe River in Comal County is considered one of the finest white-water stretches in the State.

 Comal Springs
In the language of the Indians, the Comal Springs were called Conaqueyadesta, which means "where the river has its source." Comal is the Spanish word for basin, perhaps referring to the flat area at the base of a limestone bluff containing the springs.
The Comal River population of the fountain darter was completely eliminated by the 1950's drought when the river was reduced to isolated pools of water.
Most of the water that becomes Comal springflow originates with recharge far to the west of the Springs and moves through major flow zones in Medina and Bexar counties on its way toward New Braunfels (see Flowpath Map).

The fountain darter is found in Spring Lake at the headwaters of the San Marcos River, in the main channel of the river to the confluence of the Blanco River, and in the Comal River.
Schenck and Whiteside (1976) estimated the population in the San Marcos River between Spring Lake Dam and the San Marcos Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall to be 102,966 individuals.
River dredging and damming, riverside construction, and bottomland cultivation have destroyed plants, altered stream flows and temperature, or increased siltation.

The Comal River, said to be the shortest river in the United States, rises in a number of large springs in New Braunfels in southeastern Comal County (at 29°43' N, 98°08' W) and flows southeast for three miles to its mouth on the Guadalupe River, also in New Braunfels (at 29°42' N, 98°07' W).
It has a number of small islands in its upper reaches, and its course crosses an area of the Balcones Escarpment characterized by low relief surfaces and moderately deep to deep sandy and clay loam soils that support live oak and Ashe juniper woods.
The abundant and reliable flow of the Comal provided power for the early industry of New Braunfels-gristmills and sawmills as well as flour and textile mills.

Most of the Comal River follows the path of an old mill race, here referred to as New Channel, then flows through a channel carved by a tributary stream (Dry Comal Creek), eventually rejoining its original watercourse.

Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels established a German colony on the Comal River in 1845 and named it after Braunfels, Germany, the site of his castle on the Lahn River.
Prince Solms Park is a lot like Barton Springs with a concrete embankment and sidewalks containing the Comal River, and tall shade trees like cottonwoods, oaks and pecans, Spanish moss, and well-manicured grounds.
During the peak of summer it can be very crowded, with everyone tubing the river including families with children, students, and teenagers with dogs, coolers, and radios in tow.

We suspect that fountain darter deaths were caused by the parasite in the Comal River during this study.

The first time I floated the Comal was the summer of 1994, with a HOBY alumni reunion.
I've floated the Comal before and it seems the only good rapid is the chute (all of 10 seconds), the rest is kind of a slow go...plus most of the scenery seems to be buildings and not a whole lot of nature like on the Guadalupe.
You're definitely right about the differences between the Comal and Guadalupe rapids, I had figured we'd do the 'lupe this last time but the Comal was a lot closer to where the wedding party was staying, and they had some older tubers as well.
