Rock the Casbah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Rock the Casbah", one of the most popular songs by The Clash, was released on their 1982 album Combat Rock.
"Rock the Casbah" originated when the band's manager, after hearing them record an inordinately long track for the album, asked them facetiously "does everything have to be as long as this raga?" (referring to the Indian musical style known for its length).
It has been reported that "Rock the Casbah" was an unofficial anthem for the American army during the first Gulf War (the line about dropping "bombs between the minarets" being particularly relevant).

Like a lot of rock bands in the late '70s, The Clash discovered punk and tried to change the world.
In response, Joe Strummer went home and typed "Now the king told the boogie men/You have to let that raga drop," Topper came up with an ace piano hook, and "Rock the Casbah" was born.
Combat Rock is fun and it's weird, it's every album in one, it's a strange legacy of a great band falling apart, but it still rocks.

Combat rock is a great little crag for Loveland climbers (I know, there are mostly old farts in Loveland, but some of us are climbers none the less).
There are about 10 routes in the area, and most of them are 2 and 3 pitch climbs on the main rock, all with easy walk off over the top of the crag, and back down either side.
You will soon be able to see the rock on the left side of the road, and the parking area is directly across from the main area (less than 1 mile up the road).

Music: Combat Rock (The Boston Phoenix . 07-06-98)
In the rushed confusion, the sensory overload of the 46-second moment, you sense that some important battle line is being drawn in the sands of time, that a rag-tag squad of guerrilla warriors have established a crucial beachhead for an assault on your senses -- because clearly all this intense activity has an important purpose.
Which is just another way of saying that punk rock -- great punk rock -- no matter how righteous and earnest its ends is almost always a put-on, an act, a career opportunity predicated on turning rebellion into money.
A lot has changed in 20 years, but rock and roll is still an arena in which you re-create yourself, and if that means Rancid's fashioning themselves in the image of the only band who ever had the audacity to call themselves "The Only Band That Matters," then so be it.

The kings of punk had not only begun to crumble, but their influence, noticeable among scores of present-day pretenders, pseudo-punks, wannabes and never-wills, seemed during this mourning period to still be living a private life of its own, gaining more steam everyday, bastardized, re-branded and attributed to others.
