They had put out an LP simply called "The Verve LP" the previous year and in many ways those songs were just as impressive as those on the latter album.
After the song was over the DJ said it was a song called "Slide Away" by "The Verve." Now, if you've ever listened to college radio, you can more often than not, get a feeling wether they'll amount to anything more than a one hit wonder on a small station in Auburn Washington.
Having never listened to this album, I asked to borrow it one day primarily because I hadn't heard the song "Slide Away" in so long and missed the feeling it gave me. I brought the CD home and listened beginning to end without moving from my perch in front of the stereo.

 The Verve - Urban Hymns
The willingness to take that risk is a key ingredient in the Verve's passion, but on Urban Hymns, the band has chosen a musical path that not only reaches its transcendent destination each time, but manages to leave memorable melodic signposts along the way.
Each song on the album walks the line between bombast and simplicity; the band's rock star attitude pushing them towards sonic overload, their artistic sensibility reeling them back towards the heart of the song.
Luckily however, the Verve also happen to be damn fine artists.

BBC - Rock & Alt Review - Longview, Mercury
longview do offer similarirties to the verve and thats a brilliant thing in my book becos the verve were the pinnacle of eveyhting that was good with northern soul n urban hymns.
The songs on the album are spectacular, and the strings only add to their atmosphere- I don't understand why more bands don't play around with the odd violin, etc. I think I'm lucky to have heard of Longview as not many people I know have, what's up with their marketing people?!!
UK Indie newcomers Longview release their debut album on the back of their recent single "Further".

 NowOnTour - Brazilian Girls Review
The EP has three tracks from the album and two remixes of the song "Lazy Lover."
The lead singer's vocals are very seductive and beautiful while the rest of the song is chopped up into an almost unrecognizable form.
This EP is a must have for anyone wanting to jump on the Brazilian Girls wagon; they are definitely in a good position to make a very large splash in music this year.

RollingStone.com: The Verve : Bitter Sweet Charity : News
Next week the Verve will go to the well again and release a four-song EP in the U.S., which includes "Bitter Sweet Symphony" and three previously-unreleased songs.
Thanks to a Nike ad featuring music from "Bitter Sweet Symphony," the single is experiencing a rebirth of sorts and has prompted the song's plagiarists, the Verve, to issue a charity challenge to its plagiarees, the Stones.
Some may feel the Verve's challenge to the Stones is another veiled attempt to boost sales of the group's Urban Hymns, which has seen a resurgence on the SoundScan charts, up from No. 76 to in early January to top 40 ever since the Nike ad began airing.

The Verve were forced to forfeit 100% of their songwriting royalties from the song to the Rolling Stones, despite the fact that very few people could identify the orchestral riff at its heart.
The Verve was one of the shining beacons of British Rock in the 90's, at a time when many American rock fans had stopped tuning in to England.
The band was also sued by Verve Records for using the name Verve; the band was forced to add "The" to their moniker.

The five-song '92 EP (compiling several British singles) does a great job of outlining the Verve's potential, even if the group doesn't quite live up to it.
Few bands can put together a worthwhile compilation of mostly unreleased ephemera only one album into their careers, and the Verve proved to be no exception with No Come Down (B Sides and Outtakes).
The Verve got their platinum album, their lawsuits and all the other requisite features of long-coming overnight success, all the way to the frontman's inevitable departure for a solo career.

 The Verve Pipe
The Verve Pipe made their commercial breakthrough with "Freshmen," but not much commercial success has come to band since then.
They are the kind of band that has blended in with so many other soft alternative rockers that it’s hard to hear the opening chord of a Verve Pipe song and know exactly which band you’re hearing.
The Verve Pipe’s latest album, Underneath, is extremely important to the success of this band after their slump.

 DAA CD Review: Richard Ashcroft
The Verve's swan song, Urban Hymns, was actually frontman Richard Ashcrosft's solo debut.
No argument from me there, but Urban Hymns and Alone with Everybody are so far removed from the Pink Floyd moments on the debut Verve EP and the 90s psychedelia that powered A Storm in Heaven and accompanying live shows of that tour, that McCabe's contributions must be looked at anew.
Adding to my theory is the reappearance of pedal steel artist B.J. Cole --who was part of the ill-fated final Verve tour after guitarist Nick McCabe and Ashcroft could not reconcile --and Verve drummer Pete Salisbury who play on most of the tracks.
