Comedian Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Comedian starts with Seinfeld, not content to retire after starring in one of the most popular sitcoms in television history, getting back to his stand-up roots and honing his routine at various gigs around the country.
Comedian follows Seinfeld through a number of embarrassing moments, including a performance during which he gets to the end of a joke and can't recall the punch line, even after sifting through his notes.
What's so fascinating about Comedian is that it shows the underbelly of comedy—the relentless self-doubt, the addiction to attention, the constant canvassing of the clubs at 2am to try new material on drunk crowds—and the amount of work it takes to get five minutes of solid material, much less 50 or 90.

Comedian is a sporadically entertaining documentary that tags along with Seinfeld as he struggles to put together new bits and routines.
Comedian is not the laugh-fest that the title would suggest, there are plenty of funny moments and a little too much Orny Adams to be sure, but the scenes where Jerry is having drinks and talking shop with some of the great comics of all time makes Comedian a fascinatingly voyeuristic journey

Movie Review | Comedian (2002) Jerry Seinfeld, Orny Adams
Instead of listening to the veteran comedian give advice, Adams stares obliviously at Seinfeld, frothing at the mouth as he waits impatiently for his turn to speak.
There is, of course, one inherent problem with "Comedian." Seinfeld claims he has shrugged off all the trappings of stardom and having enough money to give Bill Gates a run for his set-for-life status.
The self-doubt that Seinfeld and his fellow well-known comedians express confirms that comedians, as a group, are the most insecure people in the world.

 Jerry Seinfeld: Comedian (2002)
Comedian could have become little more than a star vehicle for Seinfeld to get himself back before the public eye, and I worried that we’d not see anything other than happy-happy joy-joy for Jerry.
The movie contrasts the paths taken by a little-known comic and one of the world’s most famous, and while it doesn’t do this in a consistently smooth manner, the material’s very compelling and incisive.
Comedian appears in an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 on this single-sided, double-layered DVD; due to those dimensions, the image has not been enhanced for 16X9 televisions.

 The Popkorn Junkie :: Comedian
Though I have tried denying it for quite some time, and though it truly pains me to say this almost to the point of tears--Jerry Seinfeld's extended 15 minutes of fame may be completely over.
It features cameos from comedians like Garry Shandling, Bill Cosby, and Kevin Nealon, and most of the film is about what goes on backstage.
Jerry Seinfeld is obviously a funny guy and a very gifted comedian, but something needs to happen quick before he completely falls off radar, and credit card commercials aren't going to cut it.

Not that its message will come as a huge surprise to anyone, but the documentary "Comedian" re-emphasizes the whole notion that doing comedy really is hard.
As clichŽd and predictable as that is, however, the film does give it a slightly different perspective — by showing comedian and former television star Jerry Seinfeld actually getting flustered after forgetting part of his routine.
"Comedian" is rated R for occasional use of strong sex-related profanity and some off-color humor (dealing with bodily and sexual functions).

"Comedian" is an entertaining new documentary that shows how Seinfeld is working to create that new batch of jokes.
Fortunately, most of "Comedian" is filled with better moments, offering true insight into the nature of comedy and how it comes to be.
Contrasting with Seinfeld's coolness and likability is a young comedian named Orny Adams, a whiny, abrasive comic who wants so desperately to be famous that he blows off constructive criticism and obsesses over everything to the point of being permanently unhappy.

When a headliner at a stand up show is on for say, over an hour on stage, I can safely say you’re missing out on the close to two years of preparation they had to go through to deliver the polished, cleaned up, spotless material that seems to flow effortlessly from their mind.

No wonder, then, that a stand-up comedian the type of profession that's not unlike that of teaching will sweat and pace and let off steam backstage while waiting to go out to the crowd.
Though "Comedian" centers on the fly-on-the-wall expose of entertainers, showing us that when they walk off the stage they do not disappear into thin air but are regular people who can converse without making jokes, the film could have been longer.
This misses the very point of the movie, which is to show us that no matter how famous and rich a performer may be, he still puts his pants on one leg at a time, a human being with the same fears and anxieties as the rest of us.

The problem with "Comedian" lies not with the fact that there's very little levity to the proceedings, but that there's almost no interest level in watching actor/comedian Jerry Seinfeld trapse through New York comedy clubs.
There's never any moment where we feel the film is alive with the energy of its onscreen participants, and we never get a true sense of the strenuous life behind the mic, as Adams and Seinfeld purport it to be.
If anything, the film reminds its viewers that comedians and actors are just like everyday people, stressing over their job performance, and worrying about how the world views them.

While Charles has made a film about comedy in which numerous comedians pop up in various capacities – usually in fairly minor ones (George Wallace might almost not be in the movie) – the major thrust Comedian lies in contrasting the established Seinfeld with the up-and-coming Orny Adams.

The key word here is "performance." Not in the sense of collective acting (the stage, for ex.), or acting in a movie where you get a script, a director, coaches, takes and re-takes, editing and so on.
But what really hurts the movie is that it was shot with a couple of digital cameras, almost always handheld.

 The Harmonists (Comedian Harmonists)
The Harmonists is a German made film that begins in 1927 and runs till 1934, dealing directly with the impact of the Nazis on the lives of the principal characters, members of a popular and very successful singing group, the Comedian Harmonists.
The director/executive producer of the film (born 1939) and its writer (born 1943) are from the post-Nazi generation and, so, in a sense, are a step removed from direct personal involvement in that dark history.
The idea of the singing group was that of Harry Frommerman, a young Jewish drama student with musical talent.

They were one of the most successful 20th century musical groups in Europe before World War II and were noted for using their voices to imitate musical instruments.

Red Vic Movie House | Comedian
Seinfeld, the show, we were told endlessly until the words lost all meaning entirely, was about "nothing." Seinfeld, the man, we learn courtesy of Comedian, is a questing workaholic neurotic who is certainly about many things and is definitely about challenging himself as a professional.
Instead of allowing his most popular show on television to slowly sink in the mire of Neilson ratings, Seinfeld did the unprecedented (at least for TV) act of quitting while on top.
The film documents all of the insecurity and backstage jitters that we would never expect from the world's most famous comedian as he works the circuit like a fledgling comic.

Richard Pryor, the comedian whose animated, rapid-fire delivery and powerful touch with taboo subject matter created a body of influence that extended far beyond comedy, reportedly passed away on Saturday (December 10).
Pryor elevated the art of stand-up to new heights, creating a form of celebrity that was part rock star, part movie star and part social critic.
He went Hollywood, like so many comedians who would follow, starring in a string of hits including "Stir Crazy" and "Silver Streak." His stand-up film "Richard Pryor Live on the Sunset Strip" set the form that others from Murphy to Eddie Griffin to Andew Dice Clay would later emulate.
