And how badly will marketing The Truman Show as a comedy hurt the movie when viewers realize that's not what it is? These questions, which lie at the heart of the picture's hope for success, will be answered fairly quickly once it is released.
Weir isn't the first film maker to apply this technique (it's a "mockumentary" staple), but he uses it to good effect, and it works well in the context of this movie.

Allen seems to be taking his cue from a worthy enough source: Preston Sturges' 1941 comedy Sullivan's Travels, in which successful farceur Joel McCrea ventures into the American heartland to make a "serious" film, all the while shadowed by nervous, bean-counting studio execs.
His newest work, Figures in the Landscape (11 minutes, 2002), was completed with the help of a CAAP grant from the City of Chicago, and is a brilliantly colored piece shot with the same pinhole camera technique, showing the relationship of the human figure to the suburban landscapes of the small town of Schaumburg, Illinois.
Comerford, who teaches film production at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, brings with him four very short films that deal with these themes, though in a more abstract and experimental way than those of his collegue, Brown.
