Comiket - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Comiket, otherwise known as the Comic Market or CM is the world's largest comic convention held biannually in Tokyo, Japan.
CM is held for the purpose of fans exchanging and communicating through their beloved hobby of dōjinshi.
The continuing operation of CM is the responsibility of the Comic Market Preparatory Committee (CMPC).

[rec.arts.comics] rec.arts.comics.misc FAQ: Part 3: Inside the Comic Book Industry
To make matters worse, comics returned from the newsstand market can not be resold--they are usually "stripped." "Stripping" means that the covers of unsold/damaged comics are torn off, and returned for credit, while the rest of the comic is thrown away--or sometimes fraudulently resold, minus the cover.
For comics alone, average monthly sales declined from 20.38 million dollars in 1997 down to 16.88 million dollars in 1999--a decline of about 17% over that three year period (with the bulk of the sales loss taking place from 1997 through 1998) for both comic books alone, and comic books and comic trade paperbacks combined.
A comic publisher makes significantly more money off a comic sold via subscription (even after subscription discounts and shipping costs) than they do off of a comic sold through the direct market, because the distributor and the retailer don't take their "cuts" of the cover price.

Weekly or monthly comics magazines continued their nine-year decline, with their estimated sales value dropping 5.1 percent from the previous year, to 254.9 billion yen.
The market has been sustained by people in their late 20s and those in their 30s.
Members of that age group have been a driving force for the comics market, and publishers target them with revised versions of comics they read when they were young.

The Virtual Comic Book Convention -
Comic books are also an enormous business, and collectors spend billions every year in the United States to buy both new and back issues for their collection.
The advantages of ordering new comics directly are twofold: 1) By ordering a month in advance, the customer is assured he/she will never miss an issue which could sell out in a store; 2) Through low overhead and large volumes Westfield offers comics to its customers at a 30%+ discount to the cover price.

All I know at the moment about the Comic Market convention is what I've read in this, the $16.00 convention guidebook that all the shops selling new manga are offering.
It started mainly as a showcase for doujin, which are comic books published by individuals and small companies in small numbers; but now the convention is so big it showcases not only the doujin, but also larger established companies and magazines, and comic book related software and toys.
There are movies and plenty of other minor events, as per any comic book convention, but the Comic Market -- nicknamed "Comiket" by its fans -- is distinct from others in the sheer size it has reached.
