Comic book death is a neologism used somewhat ironically in the comic book fan community to refer to the killing off and subsequent return of a long-running character.
This irony addresses the fact that while death is a serious subject, a comic book death is generally not taken seriously and is rarely permanent or meaningful.
Comic book deaths have been parodied by Peter Milligan in X-Statix, in which all the characters had died by the end of the series, and by Dan Slott in his 2005 miniseries Great Lakes Avengers, in which one member died in every issue.

 comicfoundry.com - wfsection-THE 25 MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE PAST 25 YEARS
One could argue that major superhero deaths were occuring in the late '70s, but it was in the '80s that death went from being something that writers would occasionally use to shock the readers to a consistent marketing tool.
In 1989, the Comics Code Authority had a major overhaul of the rules, and this was mainly in response to the simple fact that the power of the Code had severely decreased during the 1980s.
The book, of course, was “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” and the stratospheric success of the comic (due to TV and toy tie-ins) led to a tidal wave of new independent comics looking to similarly strike oil.

Life and Arts: Comic book death, death, comic, dead - Brownsville Herald
In the grand scheme of things, of course, the death of a comic book character is no more important than a character’s death in a movie or television show, but that doesn’t mean it can’t impact popular culture.
What’s more, it was Ben’s death that pushed Spider-Man to become a hero, and it was the moment of Spider-Man’s realization that has become so iconic, not just for Spidey, but for every hero made in his mold.
His death couldn’t have been permanent, as he is too iconic of a property on his own to stay dead, but the death itself lead to numerous stories dealing with death and loss, and ultimately with the introduction of new heroes to follow in his footsteps.

Ann Arbor is the home to the Borders book chain, and we have two Borders stores and a B&N as well, plus several independent bookstores and a plethora of used bookstores (I read somewhere once that Ann Arbor has more bookstores per capita than anyplace else in the world).
It used to be that when a comic store closed in an area those comic consumers would be left in a lurch, but with bookstores and the Internet picking up the slack it's no longer the tragedy it once was.
Good comic stores will survive by being the place where those readers who encounter comics in libraries and bookstores will go to find the things they can't get elsewhere, and receive a level of service from a knowledgable staff which knows more about comics than the clerk at the local big box bookstore chain.

I'd suggest that comic book artists should watch something like this to help them better understand how a female body actually looks in the midst of a fight, but I fear the artists' attention would focus in all the wrong places.

The Death Of Superman Trilogy Summary
One of the most hyped up and pre-publicised comic book events ever was the proposed Death of the mighty Superman himself.
Few real fans of the most Iconic hero in American comic book folklore believed that he would ever stay dead, and in fact, the sequels leading to his return were already in preparation.
It was not the first time a hero would die and return from the grave, but with Superman already seen by many as Godlike and near indestructible (kryptonite near death giving him Christ-like suffering), his ability to recover from death proves to be the final icing on the cake regarding his divinity.
