Comic artist Will Eisner has described Comics as "Sequential Art", which emphasizes that the primary aspect of comics is the narrative flow between panels, rather than the combination of illustrations and text.
These narratives are predominately contained in periodic publications, for example as part of newspapers (in the case of comic strips) or as making up magazines or books that consist of many pages of comics (as in the case of comic books).
Comic strips are usually found in newspapers and are usually only 1 to 4 panels in length(in a daily newspaper) or 1-10 panels (in a Sunday newspaper).

The introduction of the color printing press and the modern "comic strip" was instrumental in their competition to circulate the most newspapers.
With the creation of The Katzenjammer Kids by Rudolph Dirks for the New York Journal in 1897, the three primary components of modern comic strips were all in place: 1) character continuity, 2) sequential panels or pictures, and 3) speech within the picture usually enclosed in a balloon.
The comic strips in the exhibit were carefully reproduced from bound volumes of newspapers in the American Newspaper Repository.

Although a critical success among professional cartoonists and comic fans, MELVIN MONSTER was never particularly successful for Dell, although they published a total of ten issues of the title from 1965 to 1969, with its final issue - a reprint of this first issue -- cover-dated October, 1969.
