What is Fantasy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
As a genre, fantasy is both associated and contrasted with science fiction and horror fiction.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, much fantasy was published in the same magazines as science fiction (and often written by the same authors).
Comic fantasy -- especially the works of Terry Pratchett -- should also be mentioned here, which parodies the above ideas as well as ideas outside the genre, in a postmodern manner.

Fantasy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fantasy is a genre of art that uses magic and other supernatural forms as a primary element of plot, theme, or setting.
In this sense, the history of fantasy and the history of literature are inextricably intertwined.
The history of modern fantasy literature begins with George MacDonald, the Scottish author of such novels as The Princess and the Goblin and Phantastes, the latter of which is widely considered to be the first fantasy novel ever written for adults.

Comic Book Galaxy - Celebrating Five Years of Pushing Comix Forward
The problem I’ve always had with the fantasy genre is that the typical fantasy world of forests and elves never appealed to me. Of course that’s a horrible over-simplification of what fantasy movies/comics/books offer and anyone who is a real fan will see so much more to it than that.
I suppose that’s why the first two issues of this comic worked for me. If it had to be classified under any category, not an easy task, it would be fantasy.
Yet Smith has come up with a comic that is so unique, you will never find characters that speak like the ones in here, that it can be enjoyed by anyone looking for a good story.

Thalia Muses on "What Is Fantasy?"
In general, "fantasy" is fiction in which things can exist and happen that would not normally exist and happen in our waking lives.
Unlike science fiction, it is permissible in fantasy to violate physical laws as we know them, even to flout logic itself -- although most modern readers favor stories in which the fantasy elements are consistent within themselves; if you are going to have magic, have it follow its own logical system.
This is an example of "urban fantasy", by one of the pillars of the genre.
