Comico Comics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Comico was founded in 1982 by a group of artists and publishers in the Norristown area who had previously printed a local school paper called Duckwork.
While Comico had proven to be a serious contender as a third major comic company, a decision in mid-1986 spelled the end of the comic company: it began to publish to the newsstand market.
Mage and Grendel had been copyrighted by both Comico and Wagner jointly, and with Comico in bankruptcy, that half of the copyright was claimed as a company assett.

Comico Primer #2 (1982) contained the first Grendel story, introducing debonair master-criminal Hunter Rose and his nemesis, Argent the wolf.
The ongoing Grendel series was published by Comico from 1986 to 1990, with Wagner as writer collaborating with a a variety of artists.

This first release from Comico used character names such as "Rick Yamata" from the English language version of Macross before the completion of the 85-episode Robotech series in 1985.
Comico continued to adapt the rest of The Macross Saga with the comic issues corresponding to each of the respective television episodes.
Comico responded to collectors' demand for a reprint of the hard-to-find "Boobytrap" issue in an innovative way: by re-adapting the first episode of Macross as a Robotech comic in 3-D format.

 Bill Willingham | FAQ | COMICON.com
When the publisher, Comico, self-destructed in the late Eighties, I felt it was a good time to leave the Elementals and go on to other things.
The last time I had any occasion to visit the Comico offices, one of the volumes of the series bible was being used (very effectively I have to admit) as a doorstop.
Since then, the new owner of Comico was rather resolute in his efforts to drive the once popular series into the ground.

The author of one of the first mature super hero titles (Comico's The Elementals), as well as the maxiseries Pantheon (LoneStar Press), Willingham has recently turned his attention to the realm of fantasy with the new on-going series, Fables (Vertigo).
Many new publishers, including First Comics and Comico, were beating the underbrush for new talents, so it was probably a bit easier then to get those all-important first jobs, than it is today.
Comico (the Elementals publisher), in its earliest incarnation, was in many significant ways the ideal model for the creator-friendly comics publisher.
