Comics (or, less commonly, sequential art) is a form of visual art consisting of images which are commonly combined with text, often in the form of speech balloons or image captions.
Whilst almost all comics art is in some sense abbreviated, and also whilst every artist who has produced comics work brings their own individual approach to bear, some broader art styles have been identified.

 SpiderFan.org - Comics : Reviews : Understanding Comics
In the 80's, pioneer comic artist Will Eisner produced his landmark work "Sequential Art", which for the first time in the history of the medium performed an analysis of how comics, graphic novels, and other forms of sequential art actually operated.
"Sequential Art" and "Understanding Comics" are, with very little argument, the two most important works to date in the study of the comics medium.
Where "Sequential Art" gave me respect for comics, "Understanding Comics" elevated that respect to the point where I believe that the comic book form is in every way the equal of it's peers - Fine Art, and Literature.

Comics feature superheroes or furry talking animals, therefore they are childish and beneath other forms of art or literature. The truth is that comics are one of the most potent and direct mediums available.
Will Eisner, one of the greatest comic writer/artists of all, coined the phrase 'sequential art' as a more fitting title for the medium, the word comics having come into common usage because of the funny pages of newspapers early in the century.
The moment that people realise that comics, or sequential art, is actually a valid medium with a lot to offer, we may be able to get away from the superhero and cartoon animal genres that dominate the medium at the moment.

Eisner's work is the first true academic examination of sequential art and its potential as a medium, and was written at a time when the big revolution in comics - which he himself helped agitate more than fifteen years before - was just reaching its crucial stages.
Aside from giving solid ground to several definitions - sequential art, graphic novel, the Gutter - which would become basics of the medium - Eisner's work took deeper consideration than anyone before him of the enormous potential the form has, and was an integral part of the artistic revolution is so-called comics.
While 'Understanding Comics' is friendlier and better suited for beginners and casual readers, 'Comics & Sequential Art' is more complex and more academic, and directed at those with an artistic background - after all, the material was taken from a series of lectures Eisner gave in the School of Visual Arts in New York.

The Book Review: Comics And Sequential Art
The term 'sequential art', coined by Eisner, is an obvious and overt attempt to challenge the frivolous, humorous, childish and disposable connotations of the word 'comic', replacing it with a term that is more descriptive and perhaps a little more respectable.
While Eisner notes how comics can be used to great effect for conveying instructional information, illustrating this point with examples of the technical strips he produced for the US army's Preventative Maintenance Monthly, he does not go as far as to render COMICS AND SEQUENTIAL ART as a comic strip itself.
His implicit challenge to the generations of comic creators to come, echoed in every page of his book, is to play a part experimenting with the comics medium, to play a part in fulfilling comics' limitless potential.

A comic is the work of an individual (or more often these days, a committee of sorts) that has something to tell you, and they do it by placing images together for the viewer to see and interpret based on their (the images’) relationships to one another.
A comic strip is generally published as part of a larger periodical, such as a newspaper or magazine a few panels at a time, and is most frequently written and drawn with the goal of getting laughs.
The comic book, as its name suggests, is generally a publication unto itself, and has a broader range of uses.
