  Coming up for Air
Fresh air is an invigorating concoction, 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, with a dash of carbon dioxide, argon and various trace gases.
Exhaust is a toxic cocktail of carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, benzene, toluene and xylene.
Short of sneaking up behind a belcher and jamming a spud up its exhaust pipe, there is naff all city commuters can do about the nightmare we are expected to cycle through.

 Coming Up for Air
The action in Coming Up for Air takes place in a remand cell, with Denzil (Carl Coleman) - a fl, Jamaican man about to be sentenced (pending psychiatric reports) for the murder of 'three 'community leaders' - and Jules (Chloe Okora), a Nigerian psychiatrist whose job it is to assess Denzil's sanity for the court.
The 'uncultured', or even 'primitive', existential murderer, railing against his theorisation by those who have no understanding of his world, is opposed to the 'cultured' fl woman who has allegedly experienced a simultaneous loss and gain by her elevated status.
Coming Up for Air provides an equivocal spectacle of 'performative' and 'essentialising' accounts of cultural identity that in the final analysis probably says more about our current preoccupation with giving 'difference' its due recognition than it does about social injustice.

The first part of the book is taken up by his trying to decide what to do with it - thoughts of a new dress for his wife, paying the school fees for his kids, or putting it aside for a treat are only mentioned in order to be instantly dismissed.
