Chief Master Sergeant is the ninth, and highest, enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force, just above Senior Master Sergeant, and is a non-commissioned officer.
All Chiefs are expected to serve as mentors for junior and mid-grade commissioned officers as well as noncommissioned officers and to serve as advisors to commanders and senior officers.
Until his retirement in 2003, CMS Norman Marous was the Air Force's longest serving Chief Master Sergeant, having served in the Air Force since 1962.

Chief Master Sergeant John D. Conaway is the State Command Chief Master Sergeant of the Maryland Air National Guard.
Chief Conaway entered the Air Force in May 1968 and after basic and technical training was assigned to Dover AFB, Delaware originally working C-124 Globe Master aircraft November 1968 to August 1969 as an aircraft maintenance technician.
Chief Conaway was assigned as Quality Assurance Branch Chief in 2000 for A10 maintenance until his appointment as State Command Chief Master Sergeant in July 2003.
