Governor-General of India Details, Meaning Governor-General of India Article and Explanation Guide
India was divided into numerous provinces, each under the head of a Governor, Lieutenant-Governor or Chief Commissioner.
Richard Wellesley, 1st Marquess Wellesley, who is reputed to have said that "India should be governed from a palace, not from a country house," constructed a grand mansion, known as Government House, between 1799 and 1803.
From 1947 to 1950, the Governor-General of India used a dark blue flag bearing the royal crest (a lion standing on a crown), beneath which was the word "India" in gold majuscules.

The British Army: 1 February 1793
India had at least three general officers of the British Army as Commander-in-Chief and commanding in the Bengal and Madras Presidencies [the Bombay Presidency, at the time, only rated a Colonel].
It was only on 25 January 1793 that General Lord Amherst, coming out of retirement, received the appointment as a General on the Staff to command the army in Great Britain, but the appointment did not designated him as its Commander-in-Chief.
There were no general officers assigned to command in South Britain, with the two senior staff officers, the Adjutant General and the Quarter Master General, exercising the command there.

 AMERICAN-DUTCH-BRITISH CONVERSATIONS
Upon being released by Commander in Chief, Asiatic Fleet, they will pass under the control of Commander in Chief, China, who will be responsible for co-ordinating their operations with those of the Dutch submarines.
The support to be afforded to British forces south of the equator between 155° East and 180° cannot be defined until further information is received from the Commander in Chief, United States Pacific Fleet, as to his intentions.
As the United States Pacific Fleet is responsible for operations, including the protection of sea communications, to the Eastward of 180°, it will be necessary for Australia and New Zealand to co-operate direct with the Commander in Chief of the United States Pacific Fleet.

Dennis C. Blair Commander in Chief, U.S. Pacific Command
Let me describe how we were working in the Pacific Command to deal with transnational threats, what we have done since September 11th, and then we can use the question-and-answer period to pursue ideas on the way ahead.
We are therefore very much looking forward to the results of this conference, and the similar one at the Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies in Hawaii, for some ideas on how we can proceed more effectively in the future.

John Singer Sargent's General Officers of the Great War
By the close of 1915 it was clear that French (his superior) was ill-suited to the nature of the campaign, and Haig was appointed the new Commander in Chief of the BEF on 10 December 1915.
After being appointed Chief of Staff of the British Army in 1911, French was given command of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) which was deployed to Europe in the opening days of the war, August 1914.
French was temperamentally unsuited to command of the BEF, becoming so depressed at the prospects of success following the Mons campaign that his chief concern came to be the safe welfare of his troops, to the cost of his French allies.

On the 17th of May 1859 he married, at Waterford, Miss Nora Bews, and on his return to India was entrusted with the organization of the Viceroy's camps during the progresses through Oudh, the North-West Provinces, the Punjab and Central India in 1860 and 1861.

India's economic potential also creates images about an emergent major power. However, it is economic performance instead of economic potential which will be the key to India's security.
India's policy of affirmative action for the benefit of long deprived and discriminated population segments is also an example of the societal security philosophy of the country.
What is the way ahead for India to obtain comprehensive security' The first thing to do will be to acknowledge the inter-sectoral linkages of comprehensive security.

 Raja Sucheyt Singh 1860
On Saturday, the 11th of February, their Lordships arrived at Lahore, the ancient capital of the Punjaub, where all the principal Sikh chiefs were gathered to attend a grand durbar.
It is not in times of war and trouble only that the Government of the Queen claims your services; and some among you will shortly be invited to assume the duties which belong to the hereditary chiefs and landholders of a loyal people in times of peace.
But remember that each man who shall receive these powers will receive them to be used, not carelessly or for private purposes of his own, but earnestly for the public good, and especially for the expediting of justice and the maintenance of order among those around him.

 Burma Campaign
The reason why it was essential that there was one operational commander for the three fronts, North, Central and Southern, was so that the intended attacks in late 1944 could be co-ordinated to prevent the Japanese concentrating large numbers of reserves for a counter attack on any one front.
Burma Campaign On February 25, 1942 Wavell resigned as supreme commander of ABDACOM, handing control of the ABDA Area to local commanders.
With the decision to create the South East Asia Command (SEAC) came a new sense of purpose and in November when SEAC took over responsiblely for Burma the British Fourteenth Army was ready to take the offensive having withstood the Japanese attacks earlier in the year.

Who would make a better Commander-in-Chief??? - Who would make a better Commander-in-Chief???
They want a strong commander who will not change their fate just to get elected and who does not lie about the service they are providing and have provided in the past to this country.
When Kerry and his supporters trash the job being done in Iraq, they are trashing our soldiers and their commanders, not President Bush.
This is consistent with what Kerry has always done which is to further his political career at the expense of our soldiers.

Many soldiers will have a tough decision to make if Kerry is commander in chief
But he is the commander in chief, and they do their job to serve the country.
I keep telling myself and son not to worry about it, but as a parent I will always worry as long as he is in Iraq, as long as George W. Bush remains our Commander and Chief we all will have less to worry about.
The oath is to the Constitution and soldiers serve all the time under a commander in chief with whom them disagree.

IndiaStar Review of Books. Lawrence James, "Raj--The Making and Unmaking of British India." Reviewed by C.J.S. Wallia
Wolpert writes: "Hastings saw nothing at all wrong with 'squeezing' wealthy natives to support India's 'pacification'; in fact, he was amazed to find so many Englishmen back home whose moral scruples and feelings about the sacrosanctity of property led them to think otherwise.
As Maulana Azad has written, the Sikhs, who constitute less than 2 percent of India's population, were Britain's strongest opponents: "Out of 2125 martyrs, 1550 or 75 pecent were Sikhs; out of 2600 deported to Andaman, 80 percent were Sikhs; out of 127 Indians sent to the gallows, 92 percent were Sikhs." Some loyalty!
Two of the stark statistics that reveal the colonial plunder and neglect are: At the end of British colonial rule, life expectancy in India was 27 years and literacy 8 percent; after fifty years of independence, life expectancy is 62 years, and literacy 52 percent.
