Commander-in-Chief - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Royal Navy, the overall head of the Navy is known as the Lord High Admiral, and the post has been variously held by the monarch, an individual admiral, or by a board of commissioners.
Commander-in-Chief is the commander of all the military forces within a particular region or of all the military forces of a state.
In the British Army, the office of General in Chief Command, later renamed Commander-in-Chief of the Forces, was instituted after the Restoration in 1660.

In addition, the Royal Navy was involved in enforcing the ban on the slave trade and the suppression of piracy.
In that time, the Royal Navy suffered only one major defeat - the battle of the Chesapeake against France in 1781 - and was able to defeat all challengers, as at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 where a combined Spanish and French fleet was decisively beaten (despite the British fleet being outnumbered).
The Royal Navy also participated in the Gulf War, the Kosovo conflict, the Afghanistan Campaign, and the 2003 Iraq War, the last of which saw RN warships bombard positions in support of the Al Faw Peninsula landings by Royal Marines.

George Washington: The Commander In Chief
A royal governor was hemmed in, apparently with abundant naval and military forces to enforce his orders, but was unable to command a single bit of aid outside of Boston, where he was regarded merely as a military commander of a besieged town.
He had to be commander, chief engineer, chief of intelligence, soldier, judge, statesman, quartermaster, commissary head, sanitary head, and not only take orders from Congress but also to advise Congress on legislative matters.
s the Commander in Chief of the Continental Army the services and achievements of George Washington are unique in the world's history.

 SCOTLAND'S INVENTIONS
He had entered the Royal Navy at an early age and by the time he was twenty years old he was in command of the brig Speedy.
He ruined his career in our (the British) navy, and created for himself a host of bitter enemies by his crusade against the enormous abuses of our naval administration, and by the ardour with which he championed the cause of reform at home.
His own party decided to send him to sea and he was given the frigate Imperieuse in command of which he participated in the Battle of Basque Roads.

Seattle Weekly: News: Mossback: Master and Commander in Chief by Knute Berger
With a different perspective, John Carey, a defense analyst and retired U.S. Navy commander, wrote in the Nov. 23 Washington Times (where else?) that Clinton is the antithesis of the kind of leader we need because "tolerance" was his motto.
Mel Gibson was once touted for the lead role of Capt. Jack Aubrey, the swashbuckling Royal Navy officer at the center of the film and co-star of the 20-volume book series by Patrick O'Brian.
The story on the screen is ripe for projections from viewers who are tempted to look for inspiration in the brave souls manning and commanding the Napoleonic-era British warship Surprise, especially in this time of war and with a U.S. presidential campaign looming.
