The Commemorative Air Force (CAF), formerly known as the Confederate Air Force, is a Texas-based non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and showing historical aircraft.
The group that would become the Confederate Air Force first got together in 1957, when four friends along with Nolen joined forces to purchase a P-51 Mustang.
The CAF moved its headquarters to Midland, Texas at Midland International Airport (KMAF) in West Texas in 1991.

CAF officials announced at a press conference, 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, that of 1,945 votes cast, 54 percent voted to approve Commemorative Air Force as the new name of the organization.
The new name was selected as the result of a vote by CAF members taken at the organization's general membership meeting held Oct. 5, 2001, in Midland, Texas.
CAF members voted overwhelmingly to change the name of the organization at a vote held Oct. 6, 2000 at CAF Headquarters.

The PBY's’ primary goal was maritime patrol and anti shipping, although as the war developed it was quickly show to be very vulnerable to air attacks and anti aircraft artillery and ceased heavy bombing and anti shipping attacks because of massive losses.
The aircraft was purchased in the later 90’s by the Southern Minnesota Wing of the C.A.F and was shuttled in from the West Coast in flyable condition.
Upon arrival, a general maintenance program was initiated to bring it back to full airworthiness with the eventual hope of limited restoration work like the addition of the blisters, a new paint job and perhaps a nose turret.

The aircraft was first assigned to the 341st AAF Base Unit (Third Air Force) at Pinelle AAF, Florida.
According to CAF records, the aircraft was donated to the CAF sometime during 1970.
In 1974, the aircraft was moved to Minneapolis where a unique effort was made with the cooperation of interested parties to restore the aircraft to racing condition and have the aircraft be a contender in the Reno Air Races.

 Old Dominion Squadron - Commemorative Air Force
Our Lockheed C-60 Lodestar, which was built in 1942 and used by the U.S. Army Air Force as a transport, suffered a landing incident in August of 2005 and we are currently in the process of restoring this aircraft back to flying condition.
The squadron’s Martin dorsal.50 caliber machine gun turret, as installed on several types of WW II aircraft, is fully operational and is a big hit with the public at air shows and at Squadron events.
In the past, we were privileged to have COL Robert Morgan, USAF(Ret.), commander of the B-17 “Memphis Belle,” speak to us at a dinner at the Langley Air Force Base Officers Club.
