Jemison was secured as the commencement speaker about two weeks ago after the Honorary Degrees and Awards Committee, made up of faculty and students, created a list of three candidates to recommend to the president's office.
According to Sanborn, the speakers who were recommended to the president were either too expensive to bring to UNH or were unavailable during the weekend of graduation.
She said she stressed to the committee the importance of the graduates being able to relate to the speaker during graduation, a time to celebrate the students and their accomplishments at the University.

Bill Hall, the longtime Ohio State vice president for student affairs, accepted an invitation to be the spring commencement speaker after a unanimous recommendation by the commencement committee.
The commencement committee, which is comprised of students, faculty and administrators was charged by the president last summer to recommend commencement speakers who would bring an interesting and challenging message to students, are good public speakers, and who students want to hear, Murphy said.
"We wanted to (decide on a speaker) sooner rather than later, but we were at the point where we had three or four really, really strong names that had surfaced and we were about to go back to the committee with those," Murphy said.

Ota said finding the guest speaker is considered as one of the most hated duties of a university president because invitations sent out to prospective speakers are only answered about one-third of the time.
