The 83-foot fishing vessel, the region's first commercial stern trawler, was retired yesterday, one of more than two dozen New Bedford fishing boats in line to be taken out of the industry under the federal government's $23 million buyback program.
As it's name implies, a stern trawler sets and retrieves its fishing nets from the stern, a quicker, more efficient method of operating than the so called Eastern rig, or side trawler design which was a virtual blueprint of the industry back in the 1960s.

 ANNEXES1
The design of the trawler was prepared for the specific fishing conditions prevailing in Veraval, a fishing centre in the State of Gujarat, and is appropriate for the illustration of specific features of a ferrocement craft.
Compared with traditional wooden trawlers of similar size, the ferrocement craft is more stable, has higher freeboard, greater endurance, a more powerful winch, a bigger, insulated fish hold, a larger engine and a more efficient deck arrangement for fishing operations.
This section covers the costs of producing the 12.8 m ferrocement trawler.

A Diary of Danger on the Seas
Woodbury loads more than $500 in groceries over deep snowdrifts to provision the boat for the crew of four on the 87’ commercial stern trawler as preparations are made for a ten day trip.
Woodbury’s first reaction is to throw his sharp gutting knife into a corner, "No sense having that in your hand when you are tumbling around in the water." Fula shouts in fear as the wave hits, "I’m going," believing that the wave might take him over the side.
Thompson catches the mooring line at the stern and Woodbury jumps aboard the ELM as it eases away from the pier.

 RECREATIONAL FISHING
Use of commercial fishing gear, borrowed from a friend or neighbour, such as a trawler or gill net, is not uncommon.
The areas where recreational and commercial fishermen fish are the same and the fish targeted are also the same.
While this is an attempt to reduce overlap in fishing areas, other concerns need to be addressed: the restriction of sales by recreational fishermen; the incorporation of recreational catches in assessments of the status of the fish stocks of concern; and the increased fishing effort through the development of charter boats.

 SW Maritime History - Articles - Icelandic Patrol 18 February - 2 March 1976
The RN ships could not easily communicate with them over the radio since the Icelanders were able to monitor the commercial channels that were available so confidential matters were passed by message instead and the dispatch bags dropped to the trawlermen using the aircraft's search and rescue winch.
Very soon the fishermen were complaining that the Icelandic coast guard vessels (ICGV) were interfering with their work and, indeed, cutting the warps - the two ropes that attach the trawl net to the trawler - causing thousands of pounds of damage and lost working time.
Several frigates had been involved in serious collisions with the coastguard vessels which were, in the main, robust little diesel-engined ships, mostly modern and built for the job, (although one was a converted trawler) and, perhaps importantly for them, never very far away from their homeland and shelter.
