Ronald Radosh | Commies (catalog)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Then came education at New York’s “little red schoolhouse.” Summers at “commie camp.” And college at the University of Wisconsin where he became a founding father of the New Left.
Commies is a brilliant memoir of growing up in the culture of radicalism.
One journalist calls Ronald Radosh “the Zelig of the American Left, seen everywhere and knowing everyone.” Humorous and tragic, filled with anecdote and personality, Commies is a trip log of his journey, the most intimate look yet at the experience of a radical generation.

By contrast, Radosh's radical biography in cludes watching the reggae musician Bob Marley score dope on a hotel terrace in socialist Jamaica and Bianca Jagger unbuttoning her blouse while she and Radosh discuss the dialectics of revolution in Nicaragua.
Commies thereby suggests the essential difference between the ex-radicals of the late-Cold War period and such forebears as Chambers and Arthur Koestler.

"Commies: A Journey Through the Old Left, the New Left and the Leftover Left" by Ronald Radosh (Encounter Books) -- fresh in bookstores -- is an absolutely wonderful book: funny, moving, deeply sad.
She went on to inform us that if any of our parents were intending to vote for Wallace, we should tell them they could not and should not." Little Ronald ran home crying.
Entering the University of Wisconsin in the late 1950s, he became pretty much one of the founding fathers of the New Left and stayed center stage through the '60s.

 Blogcritics.org: Commies, commies, commies
The right-wing uses Commie as a convenient label (similar to "evil," or in Clint Black's case, "devil") to avoid thinking about what those who disagree with them have to say, and to encourage others to similarly refuse reasonable debate.
"Commie" is a convenient label because Communism has almost inevitably resulted in totalitarian states obsessed with mass killing and empire.
Take away all the Commies who show up at the rallies (I mean it--take away all ten of them).

Breaking Windows 2.0: Creative Commies T-Shirt   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
So, naturally, there are various desktop wallpapers and buttons for us ‘creative commies’, and now, t-shirts.
I don't think calling ourselves "commies" is a good thing for the open source movement, but you gotta admit that it is a good play on the Creative Commons name.
I do love the copyleft logo, and now have that as my desktop wallpaper.

90% Crud: Creative Commies in Maxim
A: the graphic designer was being subversive and wanted to spread the good word, or B: the graphic designer wishes he worked in Redmond and hates the damn copyleft commies.
Probably, in either case, the caption has nothing to do with the fact that the t-shirt has a creative commies logo on it.
I really don't buy the creative commies t-shirts = subrurban consumption theory and if that was their intent they would have explained the symbol since outside the open-source leaning blogosphere that icon is very little kown.

Zap2it - TV news - Richter to Host 'Commies' for Comedy Central
Such is the lot of Andy Richter, who's been named as host of the inaugural "Commies," an awards show honoring funny folks in movies, TV and elsewhere.
The Commies will hand out awards in a number of fairly straightforward categories, ranging from funniest person of the year (nominees include Jim Carrey, Jon Stewart and former Iraqi information minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf) to funniest movie, TV series and neurotic character.
The ceremony will also include awards for "Funniest Unintentionally Funny Movie" and "Oh, I Thought You Were Dead," for a person in comedy who many thought were already deceased.
