The Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) is a non-departmental public body in the United Kingdom which tackles racial discrimination and promotes racial equality.
On September 22nd 2005, in the aftermath of the July bombings in London, Trevor Phillips gave a speech, "Sleepwalking to Segregation", warning that the UK was in danger of becoming a segregated nation.
The CRE is run by up to 15 commissioners (including the chair), who are appointed by the Home Secretary.

Importantly, CRE lobbying led to the inclusion of equal opportunity practices in several new regional political organisations - the Greater London Authority, the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly.

The  work of the Commission for Racial Equality is absolutely crucial to delivering on those objectives.
The Home Secretary appoints all Commissioners to the CRE.  In line with the Race Relations Act, there should be between eight and fifteen Commissioners at the CRE, including a Chair and at least one Deputy.
It will promote equality and tackle discrimination on the grounds of gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, age and religion or belief and will take on the work of two commissions - the Equal Opportunities Commission and Disability Rights Commission - from the start.
