  The Population Question
Serious as the problem of interrelation among environment, development and population is, it cannot be solved in an over-simplistic manner and many of the most alarming predictions have proven false and have been discredited by a number of recent studies.
Development policies that seek to reduce poverty with an emphasis on improved education and social conditions for women are far more effective than usual population reduction programs and far more respectful of women's dignity.
It is closely related to issues of development and population and the international community must extend assistance and protection to all migrants and their families....

The commission recalled GA resolution 50/123, in which the General Assembly decided to include international migration and development, including the convening of a UN conference on international migration and development in its provisional agenda for the 52nd session.
The commission considered a note by the Secretary-General transmitting the agreed conclusions adopted by ECOSOC in 1996 on coordination of the UN system of activities for poverty eradication (E/CN.9/1997/10) that are addressed directly to the CPD or that have a direct impact on the commission s work.

Following the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) held at Cairo in 1994, it was renamed the Commission on Population and Development in order to emphasize its expanded role as the main follow-up mechanism to the decisions of the Conference, and the new international approaches that aim to integrate population concerns into development strategies.
The Commission is responsible for preparing studies and advising Ecosoc on a range of population issues; monitoring, reviewing and assessing the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action at the national, regional and global levels; and making appropriate recommendations to the Council on its findings.

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 25: The world's population will reach 6.5 billion by July and, despite lower expected fertility rates, is likely to reach 9.1 billion by 2050, with most of the increase in developing countries, the United Nations Population Division says in its revised report for 2004.
Their populations is expected to reach 7.8 billion in 2050 from 5.3 billion now, while the population of the more developed countries will remain around 1.2 billion, it says.
In 2002, the division had estimated a population in 2050 of 8.9 billion and last week, in a report sent to the 47-member UN Commission on Population and Development, had calculated the figure at 9 billion, reaching the 7 billion mark by 2012.

On 14 April, the 38th session of the Commission on Population and Development, scheduled from 4-8 April, unanimously adopted a five-page resolution on Population, Development and HIV/AIDS with a particular emphasis on poverty.
Noting that urgent and sustained action was required in all fields and on all levels, the Commission’s resolution urged governments to increase the capacity of adults and adolescents — empowering women in particular — to protect themselves from HIV infection.
