In 1991 he served as president of the Yukon Energy Corporation, the public enterprise that is owned by the Yukon Government and that generates and distributes the bulk of the electrical energy used in the territory.
In 2000 Cable was appointed 27th commissioner of the Yukon, serving from 1 October 2000 to 1 December 2005 when he was succeeded by Geraldine VAN BIBBER.

It is estimated that the Indian population of the Yukon numbered between 7,000 and 8,000 people prior to contact, numbers which dropped sharply in some areas after contact, as the traders unwittingly brought European diseases with them.
HBC traders had also built Fort Yukon at the mouth of the Porcupine River, flying their Union Jack in Russian territory until the company was forced to abandon the post in 1869.
The federal government's Yukon Expedition of 1887-88 was organized and led by Dr. George M. Dawson of the Geological Survey of Canada, with Ogilvie as one of the party chiefs.

Yukon Land Claims is commonly thought to have started in 1973 with the presentation of Together Today for Our Children Tomorrow to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau in Ottawa by Elijah Smith and a delegation of the Yukon Chiefs.
However, Yukon claims had been put forward as early as 1901 and 1902 when Chief Jim Boss of the present-day Ta'an Kwach'an and surrounding area, wrote letters to the Superintendent General of Indian Affairs in Ottawa and to the Commissioner of the Yukon.
So it is clear that prior to 1973 Yukon First Nations have had a long outstanding claims dating back to the time when some of the early effects of the Klondike Gold Rush and development in the Yukon were first being experienced by Yukon First Nations people.
