But this is not all: they are claiming to be able to scientifically demonstrate that the world was created suddenly, all at once, a relatively short time ago.
There is no scientific evidence supporting the instantaneous creation of the earth and all the creatures on it but there is much evidence from many scientific fields that the universe has changed extensively through time.

Because I was dismayed in 1976 by the rising tide of belief in the paranormal and the lack of adequate scientific examinations of these claims.
Most of my scientific colleagues were equally perplexed by what was happening, but they were focused on their own narrow specialties--interdisciplinary efforts were frowned upon--a nd they did not know what the facts of the case were.
Where we had investigated a claim and found it wanting, we would express our doubt and perhaps even debunk it, but this would be only after careful investigation.

CSICOP's purpose is succinctly stated on Skeptical Inquirer's cover: "The Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal encourages the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible, scientific point of view and disseminates factual information about the results of such inquiries to the scientific community, the media, and the public.
Its favorite whipping boys are: alternative medicine; UFO sightings and alien abduction claims; all paranormal claims involving extrasensory perception and psychokinesis; astrology; "creation science" and, for good measure, the activities of any and all religious or spiritual groups— especially those outside "mainstream" organized religion.
The claim by CSICOP that it "does not reject claims on a priori grounds, antecedent to inquiry, but examines them objectively and carefully," is in my opinion a intellectual fraud in the case of its editorial stance on cold fusion.

Since CSICOP was formed in the spring of 1976, it has been a thorn in the side of those who promote belief in "psychic phenomena," in astrology, UFOs, and similar subjects and it has been criticized sharply by FATE whose articles generally cater to those who are eager to believe.
