The committee said it is "very concerned" that nearly €26 million, or $31 million - 16 percent of the €163 million spent on interpretation - is used to hire translators who are on call or sitting idle.
The draft report from the Parliament's budgetary control committee notes that the cost for interpreting 20 languages in a one- day meeting can be as high as €118,000, compared with €6,000 to €9,000 for three languages.
The budgetary control committee's report notes that the Parliament's cumbersome triple location in Brussels, Strasbourg and Luxembourg is raising the cost of interpretation.

The Budgetary Control Committee has an authority under the EU treaties to approve or reject the accounts of any European institution for a particular year.
This regrets the Council's failure to address questions relating to budgetary aspects of the CFSP and calls for it to be subject to the same level of scrutiny as other institutions.
This amendment is expected to be adopted by committee in March and by plenary in April.

On 19 March 2003 Robert McCoy, Internal Auditor of the Committee of the Regions and former Financial Controller there, blew the whistle in a Cocobu meeting.
McCoy's claims focussed on travel expenses and the systemic absence of supporting documents.
In July, President Fabra Vallés of the European Court of Auditors wrote to President Bore of the Committee of the Regions, to reassure him that McCoy's allegations had been found to be unsubstantiated.
