The Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), also known as the "Academic Big Ten", was established in 1958 and is a consortium of twelve primarily midwestern universities (the eleven members of the Big Ten Conference and the University of Chicago) committed to advancing academic excellence by promoting and coordinating collaborative activities and sharing resources.
The CIC is governed by the Chief Academic Officers of the member universities who are known as the CIC "Members." A headquarters staff of 16, located in Champaign, Illinois, administers the CIC programs.
CIC universities confer, on average, 15% of all Ph.D. degrees awarded annually in the United States.

The Committee on Women in the University continued to work with the Personnel Policies and Procedures Committee (of the Academic Staff Assembly) to determine whether increased job security is being granted equitably to men and women in the academic staff.
In particular, committee members encouraged authors of the new umbrella plan to address issues of gender and economic status as well as issues of race and expressed concern that early drafts were weighted toward student issues without detailed consideration of workforce issues.
Committee members hope that the University of Wisconsin-Madison will continue its leadership on these issues as an updated plan for this campus is developed in 1998-1999, and expect to contribute to the development of the campus plan.

With HealthWeb, those responsibilities are assumed by a steering committee comprised of at least one person from each institution, along with a collection of subgroups, or working groups, who are charged with carrying out the various administrative responsibilities for the group as a whole.

Penn State worked in cooperation with the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an academic consortium of Big Ten universities and the University of Chicago, to plan the first program for sharing best practices for on-line learning environments.
Penn State invited teams from each CIC university to present information about the strategies and information technology tools they are using in their on-line learning environments.
Another way the institute is assisting Committee on Institutional Cooperation members is through an on-line tutorial of the best strategies for on-line teaching and learning presented during the meeting.

The beginnings of what ultimately became the CIC Center for Library Initiatives—which sounds like a busy and dynamic organization, but really consists of myself and two half-time assistants—can be traced back to when the CIC provosts called for overall unifying strategies to address the new crises facing academic libraries.

Together, the group consolidated the work of the last three years and moved forward to establish a governing structure, open more consistent communication, and agree on a slate of issues to advance over the next year.
A four-person executive committee will govern the group and maintain consistency: it will be made up of a communications liaison and representatives from the previous, current, and future host university councils; the current host university's representative will chair.
