About the Commodity Futures Trading Commission
The mission of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is to protect market users and the public from fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices related to the sale of commodity and financial futures and options, and to foster open, competitive, and financially sound futures and option markets.
Today, the CFTC assures the economic utility of the futures markets by encouraging their competitiveness and efficiency, ensuring their integrity, protecting market participants against manipulation, abusive trading practices, and fraud, and ensuring the financial integrity of the clearing process.
The Chairman's staff includes the Office of the Inspector General, which conducts audits of CFTC programs and operations, and the Office of International Affairs, which is the focal point for the Commission's global regulatory coordination efforts.

 Commodity Futures Trading Information
Futures and option trading is inherently complex and risky, and it is not appropriate for all investors.
Because trading in commodities and options is appropriate only for certain businesses and individuals, the CFTC requires that a broker provide you with a disclosure document that describes the risks involved.
A Futures Commission Merchant or Introducing Broker must provide you with a disclosure statement that informs you of the risks inherent in trading futures contracts and/or options on futures contracts, as well as the effect that leverage may have on potential losses or gains.

Beware of Foreign Currency Trading Frauds
A new federal law, the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000, makes clear that the CFTC has the jurisdiction and authority to investigate and take legal action to close down a wide assortment of unregulated firms offering or selling foreign currency futures and options contracts to the general public.
The CFTC urges you to be skeptical when promoters of foreign currency trading claim that their services or account management will earn high profits with minimal risks, or that employment as a currency trader will make you wealthy quickly.
Firms that trade currencies in the interbank market, however, are most likely to be banks, investment banks and large corporations, since the term "interbank market" refers simply to a loose network of currency transactions negotiated between financial institutions and other large companies.
