  Commodore 1540
The Commodore 1540 (also known as the VIC-1540) was the companion floppy disk drive for the Commodore VIC-20 home computer.
Because of the low price of both the VIC-20 and the 1540, this combination was the first computer with a disk drive to be offered on the US market for under $1,000, although the combination of the Commodore 64 and 1541 would prove more enduring.
The 1540 was an "intelligent peripheral" in that it had its own 6502 CPU (just like its VIC-20 host) and a resident DOS on-board in ROM – contrary to almost all other home computer systems of the time, where the DOS was loaded from a boot floppy¹ and was executed on the computer's CPU.

The 1540 is relatively rare because the C64 followed close on the heels of the VIC-20, so the 1540 was quickly discontinued.

The reason why Commodore decided not to use the upper five tracks by default (or at least more than 35) was the bad quality of some of the drive mechanisms which did not always work reliably at the highest tracks.

Commodore BASIC is the dialect of BASIC used in Commodore Internationals 8-bit home computer line, stretching from the PET of 1977 to the C128 of 1985.
An anecdotal bit of evidence to support Commodore's statement that the VIC-20 could be used not only for games but also as a serious introduction to computing, can be said to originate in the fact that a young Finn called Linus Torvalds was given a VIC-20 as his first computer.
The Commodore SX-64, also known as the Executive 64, was a portable, briefcase/suitcase-size luggable version of the popular Commodore 64 home computer and holds the distinction of being the first full-color portable computer.

Commodore computer history and repair information
Commodore compatible floppy drives made by other manufacturers also emerged, but they were independently developed (for the most part) due to the fact that the Commodore 64 and 128 drives were "intelligent peripherals" possessing chips that Commodore had decided not to license or supply to its competitors.
Commodore owners were thrilled that they could have a computer which could perform nearly like the Macintosh-- for just a small percentage of the price of a Macintosh-- while still having color graphics and sound which surpassed the capabilities of the Macintosh.
Commodore even developed an incredible interactive stand-alone CD unit (based on the Amiga technology) called the CDTV which (along with Philips CDI) were the predecessors to many of the CD-based interactive game systems which followed.

Floppy disk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Commodore started its tradition of special disk formats with the 5¼-inch disk drives accompanying its PET/CBM, VIC-20 and Commodore 64 home computers, like the 1540 and (better-known) 1541 drives used with the latter two machines.
Eventually Commodore gave in to disk format standardization, and made its last 5¼-inch drives, the 1570 and 1571, compatible with Modified Frequency Modulation (MFM), to enable the Commodore 128 to work with CP/M disks from several vendors.
Commodore never upgraded the Amiga chip set to support high-density floppies, but sold a custom drive (made by Chinon) that spun at half speed (150 RPM) when a high-density floppy was inserted, enabling the existing floppy controller to be used.

 Commodore 64 :: View topic - What difference of 1540 and 1541 ?
The 1540 was the first disk drive on the new Commodore serial bus.
Unfortunately, due to a timing error in the new I/O chips, the engineers were forced to slow down the throughput of this drive considerably.
When the Commodore 64 was designed, instead of fixing this problem, Commodore decided to keep the C64 compatible with this disk drive by slowing it down as well.

Commodore had to be rescued once again by an infusion of cash from Gould, which Tramiel used beginning in 1976 to purchase several second-source chip suppliers, including MOS Technology, Inc., in order to guarantee supply.

Neural Network on a Commodore 64
Researchers are beginning to discover principles which may explain how the brain works, and while much of this research is extremely complicated and requires large, expensive computers, your Commodore 64 can be programmed in BASIC to mimic one fundamental part of brain function, pattern recognition.
In doing this, your computer is not only doing something the brain does (and your reaction may be "I didn't know a computer could do that!"), it's doing it the brain's way--by simulating the neurons (brain cells) with which you think.
Compare this to the read-write memory of the Commodore 64, which is made up of about a quarter million transistors, and remember that each transistor is only a switch--far simpler than a neuron.
