Commodore 1570 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was a single-sided, 170KB version of the double-sided Commodore 1571, released as a stopgap measure when Commodore International was unable to provide large enough quantities of 1571s due to a shortage of double-sided drive mechanisms.
The 1570 utilized a 1571 logic board in a cream-colored Commodore 1541 case with a 1541 drive mechanism.
Although the 1570 was compatible with the Commodore 64, the C64 wasn't capable of taking advantage of the drive's higher-speed operation, and when used with the C64 it was little more than a pricier 1541.

COMMODORE 1571 FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Commodore 1571 was arguably Commodore's finest 5¼" floppy_disk drive, having the ability to use double-sided disks without the need to remove them and turn them over ("flippy disk") as in the previous Commodore drives on which it was based (Commodore_1541, 1570).
The 1571 was released to match the Commodore_128, both design-wise and feature-wise.
The 1571 was noticeably quieter than its predecessor and tended to run cooler as well, even though, like the 1541, it had the power supply inside the unit (later Commodore drives, like the 1541-II and the 3½" 1581, came with external power supplies).

 Commodore from FOLDOC
It is basically a 1541 with the capability to use "burst loading" (like the Commodore 1571), and lots of new bugs.
The 1571 supported "burst mode" loading when used on a C128 in native mode, which increased the transfer speed from 1541 speed to about three kilobytes per second (about a 10-fold increase).
The 1571 could be told to emulate a 1541 for use with a C64 or 1541 disks.

The Commodore 1570 was an upgraded 1541 for use with the Commodore 128.
It also supports burst loading like the Commodore 1571, but is actually faster as it is better designed.
The 4569 is equivalent to a combination of the 6569 VIC-II and the MMU of the Commodore 64.

COMMODORE 1581 FACTS AND INFORMATION   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
The Commodore 1581 is a 3½ inch double_sided double_density floppy_disk drive made by Commodore Business Machines (CBM) primarily for its C64 and C128 home/personal_computers.
Like the 1541 and 1571, the 1581 has an onboard MOS_Technology_6502 CPU with its own ROM and RAM, and uses a serial version of the IEEE-488 interface.
However, unlike the 1571, which is nearly 100% backward-compatible with the 1541, the 1581 has limited compatibility with Commodore's earlier drives.

Commodore also carefully considered the backwards compatibility they promised with the Commodore 128 computer.
So, in addition to the high speed/high capacity "1571 mode", and the variable format "MFM" capabilities mentioned above, the Commodore 1571 was capable of a Commodore 1541 emulation mode, allowing it to load and run all the old Commodore 64 software.
The peripherals on the Commodore serial "network" each had a unique identifying "Unit" number, typically ranging from 8-30.

A Look Around the 1571 - Commodore's Disk Drive Companion to the 128   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Commodore also appears to have learned their lessons on the 1541 very well, as careful attention has been given to previously troublesome hardware details.
Commodore 64 users will not be able to take advantage of the faster operating speeds without special software.
Although the 1571 is a double sided drive, it is still fully capable of reading and writing single sided disks formatted on a 1541 disk drive.

Commodore needed its next computer to be a serious upgrade from the C64 if it was to successfully battle its arch nemesis; It needed to keep Jack Tramiel's, Atari, from being successful with their rumored new "ST" line.
An exception was the Commodore 1902 monitor for $400 ($100 more than the price of a new C128!) which was required to use the new 128's advanced 80 column mode.
The Commodore 128D: In an effort to extend the life of this powerful multitalented machine, Commodore introduced a slight derivative of the 128 called the Commodore 128D in 1987.

The XH1541 and XH1571 hybrid cables description
The XH1541 hybrid cable and the XH1571 hybrid cable are companion cables for the X1541 cable, to get the most possible out of SPP ports, by creating an additional semi-parallel connection between a Commodore 1541, 1570 or 1571 drive and the PC parallel port.
If you built a cable and you created or already have a parallel port on your Commodore drive then you can connect one end of the cable into it; otherwise the cable is, probably, just hanging out of the drive.
If you built an adaptor then connect the user port plug onto it, being very careful to exactly do it upside down, that is, the top side of the user port plug should be levelled with that side of the adaptor without circuitry.
