According to audited figures for 2002, 17,144,627 vehicles passed through the Bridge toll plaza, an increase of more than 4.4% compared to 2001 statistics and the first time ever that volume exceeded 17 million vehicles.
According to Curtis V. Esposito, Director of Bridge Operations, the increased traffic volume on the Delaware Memorial Bridge can probably be traced to a number of factors, including the excellent weather conditions and construction activity on the nearby Commodore Barry Bridge.
“For the first eight months of 2002, the Commodore Barry Bridge was under roadway construction, which could account for some of the Delaware Memorial Bridge’s increase in commercial traffic,” Esposito remarked referring to the decline of nearly 22% in five-axle trucks at the Commodore Barry Bridge during that period.
