DOS was one of the first operating systems for the PC compatible platform, and the first on that platform to gain widespread use (it was still widespread more than 10 years later).
Still later versions of MS Windows ran independently of DOS but included much of the old code such that it could run in virtual machines under the new OS and the latest versions of MS Windows are continually dropping ever more of the DOS ancestry.
The DOS operating system for DEC PDP-11 minicomputers (this OS and the computers it ran on were nearly obsolete by the time PCs became common, with various descendants and other replacements).

Commodore DOS - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike most other DOS systems before or since—which were/are booted from disk into the system's own RAM at startup, and executed there—CBM DOS was executed internally in the drive: the DOS resided in drive-internal ROM chips, and was run by a dedicated MOS 6502 CPU.
Version 2.6 was by far the most commonly used, and known, DOS version, due to its use in the 1541 (which sold in large numbers to users of C64s), and its emulation in the numerous third-party clones of that drive.
During the Commodore 64 era, this was the subject of a great deal of controversy, due to alleged bugs in the command's implementation on the 154x and 157x series drives.

Commodore owners were thrilled that they could have a computer which could perform nearly like the Macintosh-- for just a small percentage of the price of a Macintosh-- while still having color graphics and sound which surpassed the capabilities of the Macintosh.
