CUCKOO - LoveToKnow Article on CUCKOO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
The cuckoo is a summer visitant to the whole of Europe, reaching even far within the Arctic circle, and crossing the Mediterranean from its winter quarters in Africa at the end of March or beginning of April.
Cuckoos, too, have been not unfrequently shot as they were carrying a cuckoos egg, presumably their own, in their bill, and this has probably given rise to the vulgar, but seemingly groundless, belief that they suck the eggs of other kinds of birds.
That there is a reasonable probability of each cuckoo most commonly putting her eggs in the nest of the same species of bird, and of this habit being transmitted to her posterity, does not seem to be a very violent supposition.

The Great Spotted Cuckoo, Clamator glandarius, is a member of the cuckoo order of birds, the Cuculiformes, which also includes the roadrunners, the anis, the coucals, and the Hoatzin.
This species is similar in size to Common Cuckoo, but looks larger with its broad wings and long narrow tail.
Unlike the Common Cuckoo, neither the hen nor the hatched chick of this species evict the host's eggs, but the young magpies often die because they cannot compete successfully with the cuckoo for food.

Cuckoos are famous for their habit of duping other birds into raising their young.
And when the cuckoo's call was analysed on a sonagraph, it proved to be almost identical to the noise made by a nestful of hungry warbler chicks.
Given that the cuckoo is being raised alone, and does not face competition for food, it is unlikely that the vocal trickery is used to distract attention from its unusual appearance.

The goals of our study were to establish if chicks of the Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus have difficulty with hatching out of their strong eggs than chicks of species with eggs of similar size, and whether they possess any mechanisms facilitating hatching.
Although the rate of pecking was similar in the two species, the Common Cuckoo chicks started pecking earlier in relation to their emergence and consequently required more time and a greater cumulative number of pecks for breaking open their eggs than did young Great Reed Warblers.
Finally, our study of hatched young revealed several differences; the Cuckoo hatchlings were significantly heavier, had a longer forearm, and their egg tooth was located significantly farther from the tip of the beak.

One such response that has been demonstrated in one common cuckoo Cuculus canorus host species is that first year, naive breeders accept parasitic eggs at a higher frequency than older and more experienced birds do.

Given that nestling cuckoos eject host eggs, competition with host nestlings is not important, though cuckoo hosts vary substantially in size (Wylie 1981) and reducing provisioning costs for host parents may act as a selective pressure that could bias the sex of cuckoos laid in nests of different hosts.
For cuckoos, DNA was analyzed from 129 samples (mean number per year: 32.25 +/- 16.26; range: 16-54) obtained from eggs laid in the nests of two hosts (Great Reed Warbler [Acrocephalus arundiaceus] and Azure-winged Magpie [Cyanopica cyana]) over a four-year period (1991-1994) from a study site on the Chikuma River, Nagano, in central Japan.
A crude power analysis for overall sex-ratio for cowbirds and cuckoos was also done by determining what deviation would be required to achieve significance at the 0.05 level given the number of offspring tested.
