Plecos love to jump from tanks (perhaps they think they will find a bigger and/or better tank if they jump) so be sure there are no holes in the lid through which a pleco can jump.

Common Pleco   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Plecos (short for Plecostomus) are large scavenging catfish with a horny covering over their bodies for protection.
All have the same basic behavior; as a group they are also known as "sucker fish" for their ability to attach to all sorts of objects, even glass, by aid of specialized mouth.
Plecos are primarily herbivorous, meaning they eat a lot of plant matter, but they will take most scraps offered and adapt well to the tank if they get over the initial adjustment phase (I have found that they do shock with sudden changes, but many other fish are the same way).

When a pet store sells an unwary fishkeeper an "algae eater", it will often be a common pleco, and given their enormous adult size potential and copious waste production, this can come as a harsh lesson in stocking levels and water quality to those with smaller tanks.
The common pleco is a remarkably hardy, adaptable fish; peaceful and quite sedentary, but unless a very large tank--preferably one with a good amount of algae--can be provided, it's better left in the store than bought only to be stunted by crowded conditions and poor water quality.
Plecos are loners, territorial only with their own kind, and do well in large tanks with most fish, but have been known to suck on the slime coats of goldfish and even cause wounds with their small, pointed teeth.

 The Pleco connection
Among them, the suckermouth catfishes (family Loricariidae) collectively known as "plecos" by hobbyists, are an enormous group themselves.
Among the most commonly offered Loricariid Genera/Species is the Genus Ancistrus (Bristle/Bushy-nosed pleco), well known for their prolific algae eating activity, ability to leave plants alone and, furthermore, tolerating harder, alkaline water much better than other loricariids.
Do not use too much salt, which is quite common when dealing with cichlids, or metals (copper) on catfishes since they could die from these treatments more readily than the apparent cause you're treating.

Sexing: Male Zebra Plecos are typically more slender than females with odontoidal growth on the pectoral fins, longer sideburns and the often occupy caves with their tail swaying outside the opening to attract females.
Several accounts of spawning the L046, Zebra Pleco exist and the most often mentioned details are changes in temperature and TDS (usually a big drop in both), Increased waterflow and a very strong current, and properly sized caves.
The Zebra Pleco requires quite warm water — most are kept at around 84 degrees F. Hailing from the Rio Xingu where they are reported to live in about 10 feet of water, the Zebra Pleco is not an easy fish to collect.

The more common mistake I see people making is with group sizes of small fishes -- one ram, three cardinal tertas and one oto in a fifteen-gallon tank is not badly overstocked bio-load wise and would make a pretty display.
