Open content, coined by analogy with "open source" describes any kind of creative work including articles, pictures, audio, and video that is published in a format that explicitly allows the copying of the information.
Content can be either in the public domain or under a license like the Creative Commons License.
It is possible that the first documented case of Open Content was with the Royal Society, where they aspired toward information sharing across the globe as a public enterprise.

 Definition of Common Content
The Common Content project attempts to gather links to as much open content as possible under the Creative Commons parametric license regime.
This includes both Share Alike and so-called "NoDerivs" content, under both commercial and "no commercial use" terms, and so is not open source by the usual definitions.
There is an effort to build an effective interface to this content at the Creative Commons wiki (http://wiki.creativecommons.org/) which is a mediawiki-based service.

Wired News: Creative Types: A Lot in Common
"Many of the authors, musicians, developers and other content creators we have spoken to want to be able to communicate to their potential customers that the customer can do more with their content than standard copyright law allows," said Bob Young, CEO of Lulu Press.
These licenses will "enable authors to communicate to users of their content how those consumers may use the content without requiring the user to contact the author each and every time," Young said.
Creators can decide whether they want to release their work into the public domain or license it with one of Creative Commons' custom licenses.

 | OfcomWatch |: Ofcom's common content labelling system nuts?
All the press (eg, the FT) are reporting that Ofcom are considering a common content labelling system for all types of media content.
While I do not oppose further study of the issue of common labelling schemes, it seems like a bad idea to me. Maybe not a bad idea, but at least a waste of resources compared to other items on Ofcoms agenda this year.
In no event will OfcomWatch be liable for direct, special, incidental, or consequential damages (including, without limitation, damages for loss of business profits, business interruption, loss of business information or other pecuniary loss) arising directly or indirectly from the use of or reliance on the site.

That may be enough in some cases, but the best indicator of what a site is about is through the content on its pages.
When all is said and done, most people would rather be presented with information on the types of products or services offered in clear, concise language, right on the main page of the site they're visiting.
Those companies that are willing to create useful content within the pages of their Web site can very often own long-term high rankings.

Using SSI allows the website to centralize the navigational links in one single file, which is included in all the pages of the web site.
If a new link is added or any link needs to be updated, the webmaster has to update only this common file and the change is reflected in all the pages which includes it.
