Common Era - QuickSeek Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Common Era (CE), sometimes known as the Christian Era or Current Era, is the period of measured time beginning with the year 1 until the present.
Although common era was a term first used by some Christians in an age when Christianity was the common religion of the West, it is now a term preferred by some as a religiously neutral alternative, though others criticize it as an unnecessary attempt at political correctness.
Some object to the common era's retention of the year 1 as its epoch because it preserves a Christocentric worldview at the expense of a religiously neutral timekeeping system.

Era Superiority?: Secularists sneer at B.C. & A.D.
If, on the other hand, this era is supposed to be common among all people living and dead, then it must have started on the day the human race was created.
If there are only two eras designated to account for the entire existence of the world, then to call either of those eras "common," as in, "you eras are all alike," is nonsensical.
Whereas "Before Common Era" is what they call the period before Christ, the "Common Era" encompasses both the period between Christ's birth until the birth of the new liberal paradigm, and the period that follows that one.

C.E., an abbreviation for "Common Era" or "Christian Era", is equivalent to A.D. and is preferred by some in secular writing.
B.C.E., an abbreviation for "Before Common Era" or "Before Christian Era", is equivalent to B.C., and is likewise placed after the year number.

BBC - h2g2 - The 'Common Era' - a Secular Term for Year Definition
Supporters of the Common Era alternative say that it is unfair to force a religious system on those who do not share its values.
'Common Era' is often abbreviated to 'CE' and is placed after the date, rather than before as 'AD' frequently is. 'Before the Common Era', referring to years before 1AD, is abbreviated to BCE and placed after the date also.
Some people are also annoyed with the way that the years 'Before the Common Era' increase from right to left on a timeline, yet their months and days still count-up in the normal way rather than mirroring time in the 'Common Era' as years do.

CE : BCE :: AD : BC   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
"CE" means "Common Era" (or alternatively, "Christian Era") and refers to the same dates as "AD" or "Anno Domini" does.
That is to say, for non-Christians it's somewhat inconsiderate and for Christians it's wrong by four to six years.
So the common alternative is "BCE", or "Before the Common Era", which has the wonderful advantage of looking a whole lot like "BC", which it replaces.

The use of CE and BCE  to identify dates
CE stands for "Common Era." It is a relatively new term that is experiencing increased usage and is eventually expected to replace AD.
BCE stands for "Before the common era." It is eventually expected to replace BC, which means "Before Christ." BC and BCE are also identical in value.
Most theologians and religious historians believe that the approximate birth date of Yeshua of Nazareth (Jesus) was in the fall, sometime between 7 and 4 BCE, although we have seen estimates as late as 4 CE and as early as the second century BCE.

ThePolitic - Canadian Political Weblog » “Our Common Era” vs. Anno Domini
According to religioustolerance.org and the BBC, the “common era” refers to the common usage of the Gregorian calendar.
We happen to be using it, so that accident of history makes it “common.” This is a classic example of what postmodern thinker Richard Rorty refers to as liberalism’s “parasitic” relationship to Christianity (I almost wrote “Judeo-Christian heritage” - which itself is a late modern construction).
As usual, a deeper account of “common” is beyond the grasp of either the proponents of BE/BCE or of the anti-globalization crowd.

They demonstrate that such differences can be expressed in a common language and in a civilized way.

I don't see what's so "common" about the "common era".
I use BC and AD becuase they are what I've grown up with, but BCE and CE work just as well for me (though, thinking on it, I don't really ever use BCE and CE when referring to the two eras).
Why is it called the Common Era anyway, what's so common about it?

The legend of Arthur, King of the Britons and his knights of the Round table is usually assumed to refer to a time between the 6th and 8th centuries.
Although no evidence has ever been found of Camelot, the round table or of the existence of Arthur himself, his legend may be a composite of several personages from the eras preceding the establishment of the first kings and the House of Wessex.
