Common rail refers to a small accumulation tank called Rail where the pressure of the fuel remains almost constant and always available in order to supply the electronic injectors and therefore for an optimum injection.
The regulating valves for the pressure is fixed on the body of the high pressure pump or Rail and has the function to regulate and maintain the pressure in the Rail according to the loading condition of the engine.
On the rail it is possible to fit a capacity limit valve, a rail pressure sensor, a valve regulating and limiting the pressure.

  Common rail - Patent 6505607
The common rail of claim 1, wherein said two substantially circular-cylindrical recesses (2, 3) have the same diameter, and wherein the spacing of the longitudinal axes (4, 5) of said two substantially circular-cylindrical recesses (2, 3) is greater than their diameter.
In known common rail injection systems, a high-pressure pump, optionally with the aid of a preferred pump, pumps the fuel to be injected out of a tank into the central high-pressure fuel reservoir, which is also called a common rail.
This increases the high-pressure strength of the common rail of the invention.

Common rail fuel injection system - Patent 6497219
The present invention relates to a common rail fuel injection system in which highly pressurized fuel accumulated in a pressure accumulation chamber of a common rail housing is supplied to injectors of an internal combustion engine, and in particular to the construction of the common rail housing.
In the common rail housing 101 of the conventional fuel injection system, the pressure chamber 102 is formed in complete round shape in cross section so that tensile stresses are induced at and concentrated on intersecting portions 107 where the pressure chamber 102 and the respective fuel delivery ports 103 intersect each other.
In the common rail fuel injection system according to the first embodiment, highly pressurized fuel is accumulated in a common rail housing 1 and the fuel accumulated in the common rail housing is injected to respective combustion chambers of a diesel engine through injectors installed in engine cylinders of the respective combustion chambers.

  Technologies - Common Rail
A direct injection engine based on the common rail principle separates the two functions pressure generation and injection by first storing the fuel under high pressure in a central container ("common rail") and delivering it to the individual injection valves (injectors) only on demand.
Benefits of the common rail principle compared to conventional engines are lower engine noise levels, stronger performance and greater combustion efficiency leading to lower emissions and enhanced fuel economy.
According to manufacturer, the MTU 4000 common rail engine which is fitted for railway applications has a fuel consumption of 195 g/kWh, compared to values between 200 and 250 g/kWh for most diesel engines in service.

LucasVarity's new common rail system. | North America from AllBusiness.com
Common rail fuel system technology, which has been used in a number of heavy-duty engine applications - both Caterpillar and Cummins are in production with common rail systems for some of their engines - is considered particularly suitable for lighter vehicle applications for a variety of reasons.
Common rail systems typically operate at very high pressure and utilize advanced electronics to control fuel delivery, injection timing, injection pressure and rate of injection though a multiple injection strategy.
By controlling these parameters, common rail systems are capable of achieving a level of performance and driving comfort for diesel vehicles similar to gasoline models, with significant fuel economy and low exhaust emissions.

 Common Wiring
For starters, a common is whatever we define it to be, (by what we connect to it) and an internal power common can be (is) very different than a common rail common.
("Common" because we tied things together, and "Ground" because we tied it to the earth.) We have now created a situation where the highest voltage in the system (measured to our "Common") is the positive DC supply internal to the boosters.
Because of our grounded "Common" connections to the internals of the power supplies with the above setup, you will NOT be able to run with a grounded common rail, but will need double gaps at any block divisions between power districts.

Using Common Rail Wiring with DCC
Therefore, when DCC is used with common rail, it must be installed correctly so this potential for a double voltage situation can be completely eliminated.
Common rail wiring is totally compatible with DCC and no possibility of double voltages occur so long as you do not invert either the control bus wires or the common point on the output of the power stations.
Note: for best performance with existing signaling systems in a common rail environment, the common on the track output of the power station should be the only common connection installed between your power stations.
