Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition ( CTAE) was an expedition funded by the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, whose primary objective was to complete the first overland crossing of Antarctica as a contribution to the International Geophysical Year (IGY).
CTAE was led by Sir Vivian Fuchs with New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary leading a supply support team.
Hillary was not supposed to go to the Pole but saw the opportunity to beat the British there so he went for it and reached the South Pole on January 3, 1958, becoming just the third party (preceded by Amundsen in 1911 and Scott in 1912) to do so by overland journey.

Scott headed two expeditions (1901—4 and 1910—13), E. Shackleton led another expedition (1907—9), and A. Mackintosh headed the Ross Sea Party of Shackleton's unsuccessful Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914—17).
Different parts of the Antarctic Peninsula and the islands of the Scotia Arc were explored by de Gerlache (1897—98), a Swedish expedition under Dr. Otto Nordenskjold (1901—4), the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition led by W. Bruce (1902—4), and two French expeditions led by Dr. Jean B. Charcot (1903—5 and 1908—10).
The U.S. Antarctic Service Expedition (1939—41), directed by Byrd, introduced the notion of permanent bases, one of which was set up at the Bay of Whales and another on Stonington Island W of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Pacific Book House - Book Lists
Unmistakably an Antarctic classic, the author, Admiral Evans, was one of the survivors of the famous Scott Expedition to the South Pole and returned in command of the expedition after the death of Scott, written with the younger reader in mind.
The story of Australia's first Antarctic expedition in 1911, the author was one of the zoologists who accompanied Mawson on one of the most successful Antarctic expeditions ever undertaken, an epic of human courage.
Tells the epic adventure of antarctic exploration, in the words of the explorers themselves or those intimately associated with them, from the first recorded 16th century voyage to Commander Finn Ronne's expedition of 1946-48, the author is a noted literary editor and lecturer.

Het Laatste Continent - Literatuur - Vivian Fuchs & Edmund Hillary: The crossing of Antarctica
Meanwhile on the other side of the Antarctic continent Sir Edmund Hillary and his party were probing the immense Skelton Glacier from the Ross Sea, and blazing a trail for the crossing party to follow after they had reached the Pole.
Men had long dreamed of crossing the vast frozen wastes of the Antarctic, but not since Shackleton's last attempt to reach the Pole from the Weddell Sea had anyone embarked on this great adventure - until 1957.
This book is the full story of the successful expedition, told by Sir Vivian Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary.

 Scott Base
It was the New Zealand expedition’s responsibility to furnish the important scientific data (auroral, ionospheric, seismic, etc.), linking the McMurdo area research activities with those of the United States Pole Station and the joint United States-New Zealand station at Cape Hallett, Victoria Land.
Separate from the main group is a large store building which earlier housed the Antarctic flight of the Royal New Zealand Air Force, and on the fringe of the base area various scientific huts have been established to house scientific instruments.
The Endeavour carried some of the personnel and part of the supplies of the New Zealand expedition, the rest of the base construction materials and operational stores were brought south in American ships of Operation Deep Freeze 11.

He was accepted as a member of the 1948 BritishNorwegian expedition to Antarctica as ionosphere observer, but was not released from the navy, where his skills were needed.

 Preparation and Departure
The goal of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, as its name implies, was to cross the Antarctic continent overland from west to east.
This was Shackleton's third expedition to the Antarctic.
But even before it was over, his thoughts had returned to the Antarctic. He had been within 97 miles of the Pole, and he knew better than anyone that it was only a matter of time until some expedition attained the goal that had been denied him.

Douglas Mawson (1911-1914) led the Australian Antarctic Expedition sailing south in the Aurora.
This expedition is memorable for Mawson’s epic sledging journey in which his companions Belgrade Ninnis and Xavier Mertz lost their lives.
This expedition is also noteworthy because among the crew was the young Amundsen making his first trip south.

Kibworth & District Chronicle.June95:Tales from the Antarctic
There are the remains of a wind-torn Union Jack which stood at the base for the Trans-Antarctic expedition.
The expedition was led by Sir Vivian Fuchs.
There is a book from Scott's 1910 expedition; its leaves are blackened with soot, and indeed it still smells of the warming fires that helped to keep that party going 85 years ago.

 Antarctica
The Antarctic Treaty prohibits any measures of a military nature in Antarctica, such as the establishment of military bases and fortifications, the carrying out of military manoeuvers, or the testing of any type of weapon.
These claims have little practical relevance due to the Antarctic Treaty System which came into effect in 1961, but continue to be observed by cartographers.
Geography of Antarctica The continent of Antarctica is located mostly south of the Antarctic Circle.

Unfortunately the Antarctic summer of 1902-3 was the coldest that hasd been experienced and only the German expedition succeeded, and then only just, in freeing the ship from the ice and returning to Europe.
'Nordenskjold's expedition with the ship Antarctic was one of three loosely co-ordinated national expeditions carried out in the early part of the twentieth century as a result of a plan enunciated at the International Geographical Congress of `1895 (the other two werre Scott's first Discovery expedition and von Drygalski's Gauss expedition).

Normal transmission was an automatic, but the Trans Antarctic Expedition fitted five speed manual boxes with a useful extra low crawler gear which proved handy for crevass recovery.
The 743 is the most widely photographed Tucker, largely because of it's habit of falling into crevasses whilst crossing the Antartic.
