The largest city in Azerbaijan is Baku, the capital, with a population of 1,725,900 (estimated as of 1 January 1998).
Azerbaijan is characterized by a range of climates: from cold weather in the Great Caucasus mountain range in northern Azerbaijan; to temperate in the Kura plain; to subtropical in the Lenkoran lowlands, in the south-east on the Caspian coast.
Despite optimism about Azerbaijan's oil potential, the political turmoil in the republic led to a spectacular economic collapse in the months that followed: from an official rate of 118 manat: USD $1 at the start of 1994, the manat was trading at over 3,900: $1 by the beginning of 1998.

In March police officers in northwest Azerbaijan who attacked a cameraman from independent ANS television received reprimands, but in most other cases, perpetrators of violence against journalists were not brought to justice.
For example, in 2000 local authorities in the Zagatala region in Northwestern Azerbaijan denied a birth certificate for a newborn boy for several months allegedly because his parents were members of a local Baptist Church and gave their son a non-Azeri name.

Its policy, reflecting the policy of the Karabakh Armenians, is based on the supposition that Azerbaijan’s ultimate goal in Karabakh is the removal of its Armenian population.

Then why is Azerbaijan being unfairly accused, for protecting it rights and upholding its law in face of the continuing occupation of 20% of its territory by the Armenian military in violation of all UN Security Council resolutions?
Communication Minister Nadir Akhmedov said that Armenian broadcasts to Azerbaijan are being jammed but a month is needed to make the jamming total.
