As a result a Communications Policy Statement was issued outlining the national policy for the development of the country's Communications Sector, covering broadcasting (both radio and television), telecommunications and postal services.
In May 1999, the first Board of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) was appointed in accordance with the Communications Act, making the beginning of the liberalization of the Communications Sector and birth of the Authority.
Celtel Malawi is the second GSM operator launched in September 1999 as joint venture partnership between MSI and Malawi Development Corporation.

Communications messages have been developed to address research findings on the primary reasons-both in terms of knowledge and attitude-for not purchasing ITNs.
Communications also highlight the health, financial, and emotional costs of malaria; the exclusive role of mosquitoes in transmitting malaria; the risk groups who suffer most (pregnant women and children under five); and the importance of using treated nets year-round.

The Catholic Church in Malawi has dragged Radio Islam to the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) on allegations that the Radio aired what the Church describes as provocative and insulting programmes.
Malawi has been simmering with religious tension between Muslims and Christians since 1999 when Bakili Muluzi, a Muslim, was re-elected president of Malawi.
The proposal split Malawi's religious circles with the Muslim Association of Malawi supporting the amendment while Christian faiths have mobilised all their resources to fight the bill.

On June 9, 2002, the Malawi Council of Churches and other religious and civil society groups sponsored a National Day of Prayer in Blantyre to pray for solutions to problems that face the country, such as the constitutional amendment to eliminate term limits, HIV/AIDS, and poverty.
