In late March, the Communications Ministry banned correspondents from the BBC, Radio France Internationale (RFI), Reuters, and Agence France-Presse (AFP) from working in the country after the international press failed to cover a government-sponsored seminar on African elections.
Communications Minister Pitang Tchalla claimed that nearly 80 journalists working for media from various countries were allowed to cover the elections, but few journalists working for the Togolese private media were given accreditation, and those who were hailed from pro-RPT media outlets, local sources said.

LOME, Togo - Togo's parliament hastily amended the constitution Sunday to put a legal veneer on the military's appointment of 39-year-old Faure Gnassingbe to replace his deceased father as president, voiding the need for new elections until 2008.
The military, within hours of the announcement of Gnassingbe Eyadema's death on Saturday, named his son president, contravening the country's constitution that called for the speaker of parliament to succeed the head of state until elections could be held in 60 days.

The author of the piece argued that the commission voted to halt investigations into human rights abuses in Togo because most of the states that participated in the vote were themselves human rights violators.
In November 2001, the High Authority for Audio-Visual Communications (HAAC), Togo's official media regulatory body, banned two Radio Victoire news programs that it considered "controversial" and "defamatory [of authorities]." Local sources suspect that the station's closure resulted from official discontent with Radio Victoire's news and phone-in programs, during which callers often denounced the RPT.
These and other incidents documented by CPJ demonstrate that Togo has one of the most repressive climates for journalists in Africa.
