 Patent 4156907: Data communications subsystem
A data communication subsystem is used with a host processor and main memory for the routing, monitoring and controlling of data messages between a plurality of remote terminals connected by data transmission lines.
In this respect the data communications processor has a special interface path (called the local memory interface) which is connected to the basic control interface unit and which provides for a communications path to the autonomous memory for the data communications processor.
In the enhanced data communication subsystem the major part of data-transfer functions are unburdened from the Data Communications Processor by use of a group of Front-End Controllers which handle the detailed programs and routines necessary to handle data transfer operations between sending and receiving peripheral units.

Patent 4292669: Autonomous data communications subsystem
The data communication subsystem includes means for sensing a halt or failure in the main host system and then operating in an "autonomous" mode to continuously provide for data transfer operations independent of the main system condition.
The basic concept of data communications memory involved here broadly involves the concept that specialized instructions, data and information relating to data transfer operations are stored in a portion of memory space which is readily available to the data communciations subsystem to facilitate data transfer operations.
Communications to the data comm memory are handled by a memory interface unit 61.

 Patent 4188665: Programmable communications subsystem
The improvements described herein relate to a communications processor and in particular to one which includes multiplexing means for a plurality of communications lines controlled by the processor.
In accordance with this application, a programmable communications subsystem is provided for transferring data between a central data processor and a plurality of communications lines running to remote data units.
For any given communication line, its storage location in stack 74 is used to store the host processor main storage address to which or from which data is to be transferred during cycle steal operations.

For the communications subsystem, we decided to continue using the transmitter and power amplifier circuitry used on the small pico.
Since the big picos would take the scientific data, we needed a modem to modulate the data and a receiver to pick ground commands telling the satellites to collect lightning data.
We used the chips and the crystals, that came with the kit, and modified the modem circuitry for our comm subsystem.
