Communicator (Star Trek) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (via CobWeb/3.1 planet03.csc.ncsu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Communicators are devices in the Star Trek fictional universe which are used for voice communication between two people.
Communicators use subspace transmissions that do not conform to normal rules of physics and allow for signals to bypass EM interference, as well as provide nearly instantaneous communication at distances that regular transmissions would require more time to traverse.
In Star Trek: The Next Generation (TNG) and later series, the crew wear communicator badges (combadges), small devices in the shape of the Starfleet insignia and typically worn on a user's left breast, which are activated with a light tap.

The communicator was a handy thing to have when a person needed to call in ground support or be beamed off a planet in a life or death situation.
The flip-lid of the communicator is a thin rectangular sheet of brass with many small holes which covers the main control panel.
On later episodes of the STAR TREK franchise beginning with the STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION, the hand-held communicator was replaced by triangular-shaped lapel pins that attached to the uniform.

My works were also used in two Star Trek® feature films: "Star Trek® VI: The Undiscovered Country," where several blow-ups of my paintings can be seen in the opening Federation conference room scene behind Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura.
In "Star Trek® Generations," my work can be seen as it appears (see above) in the "United Federation of Planets" symbol during the opening spacedock dedication scene, though partially blocked by a crowd of Starfleet officials standing in front of it...
