The use of communion tokens in the Presbyterian churches of Scotland began during the reign of the Stuarts in 1605.
Communion tokens were used in the Presbyterian churches of Scotland until World War I and a few of the Reformed Presbyterian Churches in the United States and Canada may have used tokens until about 1950.
"Communion Tokens of the Church of Scotland" R. Kerr and J.R. Lockie, Proceedings of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, 1940, 3942, 1944, 1946, 1949, and 1950.

COMMUNION TOKENS OF THE UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF TARENTUM
Communion tokens were used in the Presbyterian Churches of Scotland until World War I. A number of other churches have issued tokens in recent years, but these are normally replicas to commemorate a centennial or some other anniversary.
Communion tokens have been made in many shapes- -round, square, oblong, oval, heart shaped etc. They also vary greatly in size and thickness, the smallest being the size of a dime, while others are as large as a silver dollar.
There is a possibility that the decision to quit using communion tokens may have been one of the factors that caused half of the members to split from the United congregation to begin the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Tarentum.

Communion may be distributed under both kinds or species at any Eucharist, whether a Sunday, a holy day of obligation, or a weekday.
Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not to distribute communion when a sufficient number of ordinary ministers (bishops, priests, deacons) are present at the Eucharist, whether or not they are celebrants or assisting as deacons.
After the communion call, any remaining elements of the sacred species are to be returned to the church or consumed by the individual and the pyx is to be purified.

The book is fascinating as long as it sticks to the basic account, and the ways in which the Striebers chose to research the phenomena.
Strieber was already known for his other books before "Communion" ("The Hunger", "Wolfen", etc.) Interestingly, Strieber claims that his horror novels were based on his subconscious fears caused by his lifelong abductions, unbeknownst to him when he wrote the novels.
Communion was one of the first full length novels I read as a young reader.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Book of Common Prayer
Accordingly in 1552 a second Book of Common Prayer was published, in which everything in the First Book which had been fixed upon by Gardiner is evidence that the new liturgy did not reject the old beliefs and everything which Bucers had objected to was in the revision carefully swept away and altered.
In the First Prayer Book the Communion service is styled "'The Supper of the Lord and the Holy Communion, commonly called the Mass"; in the Second, and also in the present book, "The Order for the Administration of the Lord's Supper, or the Holy Communion".
The First book directs the priest to stand "humbly before the midst of the altar"; the Second, to stand "at the north side of the table", as is still the rule.

Commonweal: Communion Ecclesiology. - book review
Communion Ecclesiology Dennis Doyle Orbis, $24, 196 pp.
Noted ecclesiologist Joseph Komonchak has argued that in order to avoid two conceptual pitfalls--that communion ecclesiology denotes vague feelings of fellowship or, oppositely, a highly mystified church unrooted in history--it is necessary to define what communion ecclesiology is (and is not).
Doyle argues that the articulation of a coherent communion ecclesiology can hold in helpful tension various tendencies within the church, whether "liberal" or "conservative," and thereby mitigate the dangers of sectarianism and dysfunctionalism.

I found in her desk a lovely Communion photo, her Communion prayer book, with the creamy white cover and gold-edged pages that so many of us remember, and a prayer card with a hand-written message, “To Rita, in remembrance of your First Communion,” signed by Sister M. Callista and dated May 22, 1920.
In this parish, first Communion is a festive bilingual celebration and an important milestone in children’s lives, just as it must have been in 1920—that is replicated in many parishes throughout this country.
First Communion is a powerful church and family ritual; no one who has been present can miss its importance for the children taking part.

Over 20 years of research went into this book that represents a life-long concern to understand and counter Christianity's continued reliance on sin, fear, and guilt.
