  Guardian | Father Luigi Giussani
One of Communion and Liberation's aims has always been to put a very conservative Christian ity at the centre of political life, and critics pointed to Giussani's remark that his ideal man was medieval man. The MEPs who objected to Buttiglione were appalled at giving him a platform to further Giussani's aims.
Communion and Liberation has a number of similarities with Opus Dei, though to an even greater extent it has sought devotees within the elites of the countries where it has a presence.
Following the Buttiglione affair, a number of senior church figures have embraced Communion and Liberation's belief that Roman Catholics are in danger of becoming a discriminated against minority.

The Battle for the Catholic Church
Again, in 1984, when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, with the pope’s approval, issued his critique of liberation theology, most Latin American theologians sidestepped it by saying that what Ratzinger was describing was not liberation theology but a caricature, and hence his criticisms did not apply to them or their colleagues.
In addition to clashes over liberation theology, Vatican authorities have continued to uphold official teaching on sexual ethics in general (as in a 1986 statement on homosexuality by Cardinal Ratzinger) and have withstood calls even for an open discussion of women’s ordination or of ending celibacy as a requirement for the priesthood.
Communion and Liberation is not secretive, but like Opus Dei it targets young people and is obviously not at home in a pluralist society but intends to remake society to fit its ideals.

Communion and Liberation and the Community of Sant'Egidio were founded among high school students in the turbulent 1960s, offering the students a way to be part of the social revolution by bringing their Catholic faith and the Gospel to bear on society.
Both groups still emphasize that the Gospel and charity are the essential foundations of their activity, and both have a serious attachment to studying history and culture, but the Community of Sant'Egidio tends toward a left-of-center activist role, while Communion and Liberation members are more directly involved in right-of-center politics.
