 Markos Vafiadis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Markos Vafiadis (Theodosiopolis, Asia Minor, 1906 - Athens, Greece, February 23, 1992) was a leading cadre of the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) during the Greek Civil War.
Subsequently he worked in the party's underground organisation in Crete and was one of the leaders of the Chania uprising against the dictatorial regime (28 July 1938).
However, new disagreement with the party leadership led to his removal from office in January 1958 and to his second ousting from the KKE in June 1964.

Greece has been a major net beneficiary of the EU budget; in 2004, EU transfers accounted for 3.6% of GDP and are estimated to have been approximately 3.2% of GDP in 2005.
Greece was adamantly opposed to the use of "Macedonia" by the government in Skopje, claiming that the term is intrinsically Greek and should not be used by a foreign country.
Greece and Turkey have unresolved disagreements regarding the Aegean maritime boundary, the treatment of the Orthodox Church and Greek minority in Istanbul, and the Muslim (primarily ethnic Turkish) minority in western Thrace.

 World Communist Conference feature
The conference, held on 22-24 May was organised in to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Communist Manifesto and the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of Greece on the theme of "The Communist Parties under the current situation".
The KKE is the third biggest political party in Greece, gaining 5.6 percent of the vote and 11 seats in the September 1996 general election.
Many communist parties have taken part in forums held in various parts of the world since 1990 including the 1993 Calcutta Conference in West Bengal hosted by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Damascus Conference organised by the Syrian Communist Party in 1994.

 Balkan Communist Federation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Balkan Communist Federation (1919-1939) was a communist umbrella organisation in which all the Balkan communist parties were represented.
From 1922 to 1924, it developed the idea of an "independent and united Macedonia (and Thrace)" which would have consisted of the corresponding geographical departments of Bulgaria, Yugoslavia and Greece.
This policy was subsequently adopted by the Communist Party of Greece (KKE).

Since it's legalization in 1974, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) has emerged as a minority party in the Vouli, regularly holding between 2% and 5% of the seats.
The 1961 election in Greece had been denounced by leftist and centrist forces as "an electoral coup d'etat" for the ruling ERE party, replete with voter intimidation and alleged ballot irregularities (Clogg, 1987: 42).
A leftist party alligned with feminist, envirnomental, anti-military, and socialist groups, Synaspismos regularly receives between 3% and 5% of the popular vote, which is down from its 1990 high of 10%.

These are important meetings in which communists and other anti-imperialists can discuss forms of common action, the passage of the working class and popular movements to the counter-attack against the monopolies, imperialism and the capitalist system, and questions of the transition to socialism.
It is of course true that on issues related to alliances and collaboration, many Communist Parties have correctly expressed the need to preserve the independence of the Communist Parties and have put forward a number of concerns about the systematic efforts being made to disperse communist parties, causing them to lose their identity.
We communists believe that the working class has not only not lost its vanguard, leading role, but that at the present time, in the 21st century, this role is being objectively strengthened in terms of both its quantitative and qualitative features.

The Greek Civil War was a war fought between 1942 and 1949 in Greece (Greece: A republic in southeastern Europe on the southern part of the Balkan peninsula; known for grapes and olives and olive oil).
Greece is a country very favourable to guerilla operations, and by 1943 the axis forces and their collaborators controlled only the main towns and connecting roads, leaving the mountainous interior to the resistance.
The paradox (paradox: (logic) a self-contradiction) was that the Soviets never actively supported the Communist Party's efforts to seize power in Greece, and at the crucial moment at the end of 1944, when ELAS controlled most of the country, intervened decisively to restrain KKE, in the interests of the Soviet Union's larger strategy.

In Greece, it wages a hard-fought campaign to defend the rights of workers against the pseudo-Socialist PASOK (which alternates in power with the New Democracy Party similar to the way in which Republicans and Democrats alternate power in the US).
Oskar Lafontaine of the German Social Democratic Party, and an opponent within that party of Gerhard Schroder, is one of the founders of this new “European” Left Party.

After Germany attacked the Soviet Union, Klaras was sent to Central Greece (Roumeli) by the Communist Party in order to assess the capacity of the development of a guerrilla movement against the Nazis.

KKE (aka the Communist Party of Greece) was founded in 1918 by many socialist groups and organisations among which we can remark the Jewish Socialist Convention, and the Thessaloniki Socialist Federation and several other socialists of the time.
During the twenties the party was turned upside down by an internal crisis which had many similarities with the one in the Soviet party - but also quite a lot of differences too.
At that time, the party threw out of its ranks members considered to be of the "menshevik" mould and later on, when things in Comintern got settled up, Trotskyists followed them out.
